Lather on the sun screen everywhere else and say you have sensitive skin maybe? Or to put slightly more masculine you burn to a crisp in the sun?

Make it a shirt with a really amusing phrase or joke on it and use that as your reason. Perhaps?

...You don't need one?
I've been swimming with shirt, no one comments.

You could get a rashguard?
I swim in a binder and short-sleeved under armor shirt. No one's ever said anything.
Use a sensitive skin/preference excuse. No one cares, really. My cousin swims in a tanktop and shorts, and our uncle swims in his shirt. No one asked us why we didn't take our shirts off.

i think i will say that "i got a really bad sunburn yesterday dont want it to get worse." and i dont want to wait to get asked as wearing a shirt makes a horrible first impressionas i wont know anyone but the host.

I burn very easily in the sun, so if someone I don't know (all the people I know know me as a girl) asks me why I'm wearing a shirt in the pool, I just tell them that. Most people just say alright and move on. If that doesn't work, you can say you have an embarrassing birthmark on your chest or something.

Sorry to jump into a guys thread. In Australia it is by no means unusual to see guys wearing T shirts in the pool or in the sea.  Sun burn awareness is quite high, if any one does ask just tell them We have a family history of melanoma.
Enough said

Look, no one will care. I went swimming in a local lake the other week in a T shirt while everyone else was in shorts/bikinis, no one even batted an eyelid. It's a big thing for us, because we feel like it's so obvious why we're wearing one, but guys wearing T shirts in pools is hardly groundbreaking. People will only start to wonder if you get anxious and defensive about it. If someone asks, tell them protection from the sun, and that's it. No one cares.

Or you could just say you're fat without a shirt on. :P

On the Penn State Summer Leadership Conference, I had my friend "accidentally" push me in...good idea, worked well: no questions, was referred to as male multiple times, totally passed

I wore a sleeveless mesh/jersey type shirt (from WalMart)

Honestly, if you don't mention or do anything to draw attention to it, I highly doubt anyone will notice or care too much. I see lots of guys of all shapes and sizes wearing shirts when swimming or in the sea — nobody really seems to think anything of it. I don't swim often but wear a rash guard when I do. Nobody's batted an eyelid or said anything so far, and even if they did, I have terrible eczema all over my back. That's my legit excuse ;]

It's easy to feel self conscious about these things but I think people take much less notice than we assume.

The only time it was brought up that I was wearing a rashguard (with my binder underneath), I just told them I had some bad scarring on my upper body from a car accident when I was little and it made me very self-conscious. No further questions. I doubt people will quesion you.
