A story in the Philadelphia Inquirer raises some troublesome questions about the treatment of transgender inmates. There are a number of concerns also raised by the way the story is being reported by the paper as well. I have contacted one of the reporters on the story, and we have plans to speak on Wednesday.

Firstly, given the stereotypes of transgender people, it is not an encouraging sign that the story begins with the phrase "GET NAKED, squat and cough." Further references to "keisters" and "butts" don't help either.

Corrections officials have quickly closed ranks

Because they are a gang.  Just like the Crips and Bloods and the bikers - and rule one is you don't testify on your own.  Sacrifice everyone, and anyone else, but protect the group.

Their union holds a disgusting amount of power here. My uncle used to get paranoid after asking for financials (prison system auditor). They're badder than many of the criminal's they bust. I kinda wish IATSE had it so good.

I taught off and on at a couple of prisons in Iowa and I honesty don't know which side I'd choose.  The guards have guns, but on the other hand the cons have more personality and are a lot less bitter as a general rule.  But really, I never trusted any of them.  I just lived to get my ass back through the sally port, get in my car, crank the stereo and spark a phatty.  The entire atmosphere just made me want a hot shower.  Tremendous waste of money, time and talent all around.
