whew! Electrolysis hurts like h e l l llllll. I mean, really, it felt like a bunch of stingy bees and on top of that a really bad carpet burn! like, Wow. My second session and I tackled me upper lip! Yayy for meee. I got the most sensitive part over with.
lightweights...i regularly fall asleep during my sessions. :P

could fall asleep, but the nudging of the electrologist's fingers would keep me awake. :laugh: I actually look forward to my electrolysis sessions because I feel so relaxed. The nice music playing, the little eye covers so her light doesn't blind me, always a good conversation, learning about the procedure and skin care tips (because I go to an all-purpose beauty spa). Always a good time!
Then again, I have a pretty high pain tolerance and used to pluck my facial hair regularly about 10 years ago. ;) Maybe that's part of it: electrolysis puts me into a good headspace.

bee's? I compaired it to a swarm of wasp stings. bees are more painful.
My eletrologist mentions that pepoles skins are different compisition some pepole have thick oily skin those indivduals suffer less pain, as it carries the current better and lower current levels are needed meaning it only hits the folical.
However if you have skin like mine, (Thin, Dry and fragile) You need alot more current and it hurts more.
Yeah it hurts... But I refuse to let pain hold me back. afterwards it feels like I've been engaging in fistycuffs... swollen numb face.
I hated it too! It was especially bad right under my nose. But don't worry about it... you only have 18 to 24 months of it! Oh, I don't know how I got through all that.

it's pretty much the same for me. relaxing music, eyes closed, bit of a chat to start with...get in my zen space and all of a sudden i'm not thinking about the pain and bang...snooze time. it's not that it doesn't hurt, but rather that i don't care that it hurts.
mind you getting my tattoo done on tuesday I giggled a few times because it was ticklsih...despite the fact it hurt.
I've only had one session done so far of hair removal, and that was with laser. I'd compare that to someone repeatedly snapping a rubber band against your face in different areas. And then there's the burnt hair smell for ages....
my tattoo was a whole lot less painful. I watched TV as I got ink'ed. ^_^
I think after six weeks from my last upper lip blast I may be free.
Pain what pain, oh the times I was reduced to tears.
No I don't remember them.

Not that plucking made it physiologically easier to do electrolysis, but that I was used to the sensation of plucking from having done it so many years ago. And plucking my facial hair brought me a small measure of psychological comfort that I also get from electrolysis, though I stopped the plucking about 10 years ago. :) Not that I had that hair-plucking condition, I just liked the smooth feel across my face.

when I was going through it many, many years ago, I used to take a half a hydrocodone before I left the house...more or less slept through two hour sessions.
For the work on the upper lip area, I had found a local dentist who would do novocaine injections for me, and that gave a few hours of time as well...
The electrolysis itself isn't that bad, in a way it's pleasant. Having to grow my hair out a few days before is the painful part.
I think the machine and technique matter a lot. I'm sure one person who's had and older machine with a less-than-skilled practitioner will attest to some significant discomfort, while those of us lucky enough to visit someone who's up to date with their equipment and skill will likely be able to spend the hours napping away.
Personally, other than the very middle of the upper lip I don't feel much. However, I don't have facial hair beyond the goatee area, so I have no idea what it feels like to get zapped on the cheek bone or jaw line.

Imagine taking a searing hot razor and cutting it into you skin every half a second for 20 minutes, the more hair you have the deeper the cut and the more pain you get. Especially in areas where you have darker hair and skin. It felt like i was paying someone to torture me, but cant argue with the results, my face and other areas are hair free :D and the pain goes down to a soothing warmth as you lose more and more hair.
So when they say almost painless laser hair removal they mean for people with little or no dark hair, Most women dont have much so its pretty painless to them, however, should you have been unfortunate enough to start life with a little more testosterone then most... get ready for the pain train.

The jaw feels about the same, and the cheeks hurt slightly less.
I've noticed that the parts of the face that have bone under the skin are more painful than the parts without. Cheeks and neck are no problem.

I wish they had laser equipment when I went through it. For the first three times I had my upper lip cleared, I had a dentist numb my lip. I had a 5 o'clock shadow 5 minutes after I shaved when I first started treatment. I remember the first two times that I had my entire face done, in the beginning, I swole up like a beach ball. How hideous I looked. I still hadn't really come out yet and people really gave me odd looks at work, having no clue what was going on with me. Oh, that was a tough time in my life. I don't know how I got through it.

Yup.
Thankfully, my upper lip is almost completely clear after eight months of weekly treatment. My lower lip and the front of my chin got whatever time was leftover after my upper lip was treated, and they're well-cleared with just a few thin hairs reoccurring. It's under my chin that's killing me right now. It's not the pain, it's the fact that it's still there. I also took 1/2 a hydrocodone before my upper lip treatments as well as diphenhydramine/Benadryl. With the drugs and good music together, .truly relax into a zen state for two hours.
I can also suggest you ask your electrologists to try using the Laurier Insulated Bulbous Probe (http://www.laurierinstruments.com/) (IBP). It has made a world of difference in my treatment, in that surface inflammation is no longer a problem, and treated follicles STAY clear for months
It really hurts around the nose area, my electrologist recommended going to the dentist, and have them num the area around the nose. She new a dentist in the area and for a fee, he would num the area to be worked on. There was also a medication called emla cream used for numbing the skin.
