So, I was dragged off to my parents church today, as is our weekly custom. A few minutes into mass, a teenage guy and his dad walked in and, after frantically trying to find an open seat, came and sat next to my family with the teenager next to me. Then the weirdness started. Every time I slouched down, he slouched down. Every time I bit at my thumbnail (yeah, I'm gross), he bit at his thumbnail of the same hand. Every time I reached up with my left arm and scratched my ear, he did the same thing. Etc, etc. Everything I did, he did too. O.o It was so weird.
Either he was copying my every movement for no apparent reason, or I'm a pro at teenage male body language. I honestly don't know which.
This event wasn't particularly important at all, but I just had to share it with someone. I'm still somewhat confused by it.
Maybe he was just really, really bored and thought playing 'copycat' would be a good way to pass the time. I dunno.
At times people will mimic the body language of another person when they are attracted to them.
That is what jumped into my head. I have no idea if it's true or not.
@Ender: Maybe, but he didn't seem to be paying attention to me. *shrug* He probably was bored, though. We didn't have a good speaker today.
@Squirrel: Haha. :D I've heard that before, and in many cases it is true to some extent(I could go on a scientific tangent about how), just guessing that this was not one of those times. I actually have noticed that I tend to mimic the behaviour and body language of the people I'm around. I think it's something I've picked up over the years as a sort of survival instinct to become 'invisible'. Now I'm rambling.. blah.
It was weird, though.
haha that is really weird
Did you try saying hi after church? Just to see if he was playing around or something?
Although my therapist and I have different body language, I've noticed that whenever I lace my fingers behind/on top of my head, he does too. It seems to be completely unconscious.
Maybe he was just really, really bored
That sounds like the most plausible answer.
Good chance he had no idea that he was copying you. People tend to mirror eachother all the time, people sitting next to eachother (maybe even in a row) leaning with their heads on their hands. Or when you talk to someone and run your hand through your hair the other one does so as well shortly after.
If you watch yourself you can notice yourself doing it as well. ;)
