Title: Hormone Blockers
Post by: Alex37 on September 01, 2011, 10:20:34 AM
I'm hoping to start T sometime this spring, but until then I'd really really like to be on hormone blockers.  I'm not sure how to go about getting them.  I don't have much money, and I don't have insurance at the moment, though in about a month or two I should have some really basic crappy insurance through my college.  With the insurance, there is a small number of doctors outside of my college's clinic whom I could see, but I don't know who they are yet.  Atlanta has a Planned Parenthood and the Feminists Women's Health Center, but the FWHC isn't accepting new ftm patients at the moment because they're restructuring their program.  Also, I heard that it's unhealthy to be on hormone blockers for an extended period of time because you need some hormones in your body, so I'm not sure if I'd even be able to convince a doctor to prescribe them.  That's why I really want to find a trans friendly doctor as opposed to a random one that my insurance covers.  I'd only need them for about half a year, and if I don't start T this spring for some reason, I suppose I could just go off the hormone blockers for a while *sigh.*  At this point it seems like Planned Parenthood is my best bet, but before I pay for an appointment with them I was wondering if anyone has any experience with this?

I don't know anything about hormone blockers.

But, I do know that Chaste Tree Berry can help lower your estrogen levels, which wouldn't hurt. You can pick it up at healthfood stores, and it's OTC. I think it's about...$12 a bottle? Or something around there.

Along with this, you could also look into an anti-estrogenic diet. You'd be surprised where your body can pick up additional estrogen, and cutting out the unnecessary E would be a big help to you even if you can't get on T yet. Good luck!

I was on hormone blockers for 6 months and unless your going through puberty I wouldn't recommend it. The main reason why not to is it's really expensive, for me each shot was $2,000 and if you don't have insurance or insurance doesn't cover it then it's not really worth it. It also probably won't do anything except stop your period.
Heres some information:

I would reccomend taking Depo Provera, a birth control shot that you get every 3 months that stops your period and has virtually no side effects, I was on it for 4 months: http://familydoctor.org/online/famdocen/home/women/contraceptive/043.html (http://familydoctor.org/online/famdocen/home/women/contraceptive/043.html)

There may be other hormone blockers, but I haven''t heard of any, and there is no generic Lupron.
