How do you go about getting your gender marker changed? Do you have to have surgery or can you just be on hormones or have your counselor or endo doctor write a letter? How does that work?
Each state is different. A google search will usually answer most of whats needed. I know its been talked about on here before also.
I've done a search but I can't find anything. I'm also wondering, do you have to have your name legally changed first before you get your gender maker changer or it doesn't matter?
Yeah, each state is different. For my state (Washington), in order to change the gender marker on my driver's licence, all I have to do is get a therapist to fill out a form for the DMV confirming my change of gender for them. simple.
Depends on where you live and what you're trying to get your gender marker changed on (driver's license, birth certificate, social security, etc).

Thanks guys. Thanks Adio for the links.
Well, "gender marker" is ambiguous. On which document do you mean?
In the US:
- Driver's licence - depends on state, requires anywhere from therapist's letter to surgery
- Social Security - requires a therapist's letter
- Passport - requires a therapist's letter
- Birth certificate - depends on birth state, either impossible or requires surgery
- School records - depends on school, anywhere from request to requires birth certificate
Renate,
being so well informed would you know the current German rules for citizens living outside Germany??

What about West Virginia?

What about West Virginia?
From the links I provided above:
West Virginia will change both name and sex, and will issue an amended birth certificate with the old name struck over and the new name and sex typed in the margin. You will need an original or certified copy of the court order for your name change, and an original letter from your surgeon.
Any change of gender (on driver's license) requires a court order specifically indicating that the gender change is complete.
Social security is the same (for the most part) for everyone in the US. It's too much for me to copy/paste. See the third link in my post.

All except for school records, birth certificate, and passport. I just saw a video about a guy waiting to change his maker so he can get insurance to cover his hysterectomy. If your gender marker is changed to male insurance won't cover a hysterectomy. So I'm not sure what to do about that... I don't plan to get a hysto, but if it comes down to it that I absolute have too, I guess it's better to wait to changer my marker. Unless I can change my marker on everything else except my insurance for now and change my marker on my insurance later...?
For German expatriates the court in Schöneberg is responsible.
Apparently your personal attendance is required.
