What story? She's not gay! What's the issue? Apparently, there was one, and I was missing it so I went back to the original email with Oprah's declaration. Because of the avalanche of speculation about her close friendship with Gayle King, Oprah decided to squelch the rumors in the August issue of O, The Oprah Magazine.

"There isn't a definition in our culture for this kind of bond between women. So I get why people have to label it – how can you be this close without it being sexual?" Oprah says in the article.

Actually, if she's a lesbian, it is a BIG DEAL.

Think of how many people love Oprah. When's the last time you heard someone (aside from rappers, and that's a different issue) talk bad about her? She does a lot to help people. Most folks absolutely love her. And if she is gay, and she came out...just think about what that could do for gay rights. I'm serious.

Oprah has a TON of media power.

There's nothing wrong with being gay.  I'm attracted to women still and I'm proud to admit it.

   Hi,

I don't know that Oprah cominig out would be meaningful in any way.  Ellen came out and there was probably some attitude adjustments among some people. Rosie came out. Nobody cared. Rosie got married. I think Rosie's marriage was meaningful in some ways.

At this point, if Oprah came out, I don't think it would advance much.

Just an opinion,

Rebecca

Ellen and Rosie don't have a tenth of the influence that Oprah has. People don't go out and read books by the dozens because Rosie says she liked it. No, people hate Rosie, they make fun of her constantly. She's a joke. (I don't have a problem with her - I'm just saying, in the eyes of the media and most of the population...)

Ellen, there's a lot more respect there. But still, who is listening? All the folks that are already gay, or are already alright with gays. She didn't have a talk show until she came out. She isn't doing anything mindblowing.

I also think it would be a huge advancement simply because she's black.

There is SO MUCH homophobia in black communities. If Oprah couldn't help out with a political advancement, it could at least be a social one.

People listen to Oprah. She'd, at the very least, get a chance to speak her mind.

Interesting article and an interesting thread..When I think of Oprah, the first word to pop into my head is benevolent..Rosie=controversial and Ellen=hilarous
Anyway I rather see any of the show that these girls host rating high than when Springer was King!

Why are you all talking about it. It is her life and a pretty good one, too.
