I've seen a lot of anime where the sex change was a gimmick or plot device, Such as Ranma 1/2 and Kampfer. But I started watching Hourou Msuko or Wandering Son, last night. I like it because there is no magical sex change or anything like that. It's slice-of-life drama about a middle school boy who wants to be a girl and a girl who wants to be a boy. But I thought some might like to watch it so here's the link.

I just watched the first episode. Pretty good, and I could very much relate to the moment when Shuichi got caught crossdressing. I imagine that's a pretty common fear, getting caught. Now I'm hooked and I'll have to watch them all, :)
Interesting, but I would not have leizure time to watch all episodes.

Well, you could get the manga (http://www.animenewsnetwork.com/encyclopedia/releases.php?id=16903) and read it whenever you like. ^_^
Yes. The Anime seems to have skipped a few manga before it starts, I've been told. But the manga was translated by a dear friend named Matt Thorn. He also translated the first few Ranma 1/2 books. So, given that is my all time favorite manga, I've felt quite honored to know him.
I cried at the first episode and almost every episode after that. I haven't been able to pin down exactly what makes me cry in some of these. I've got almost no recollection of my childhood. But I think part of it is seeing myself in some of those situations and feeling helpless as we watch the main character's slow march towards puberty and wishing I could relive those moments and do things a little different.
i find most things like this ie kamfer as super ecchi and gross but i like this its no where as bad :)
Despite some difference between the anime and the real world, that anime also reminds of my puberty. Now I think I was closer to a girl than a boy at that time in both physical and psychological terms. I was very emotional and delicate. But, I did not understand well why teachers and class mates used to comment I looked like a woman. At high school, some class mates compared me to a western actress who I had never heard of.
The cherryblossom scene at the 1st episode also reminds me of my first lover. I fell in love with a boy when flying cherry flowers were dazzlingly white. That was the 1st and last time I was attracted to a man. He was just pretty to my eyes, but the conclusion was not so good.
After my teens, I just buried gender identity stuffs in the ground, and even I did not realize it. Now I am just fine with my life. Without any treatment or surgery, I cherish my kids while sometimes enjoying going out.
Today my little daughter asked me whether I am willing to have my hair cut short. She added that people comment like "Your dad looks like a woman." I replied that I am allowed to keep my hair long because I am a kind of special person. Then, she began to shout at her playmates like "My dad is special, so he can have long hair!"

Takako Shimura is one of my favorite Manga writers, Aoi Hana is also good if you are into Yuri, and boku wa onna no ko.
Too bad the Anime is so short versus the Manga, it really doesn't have the time to do character building that the Manga does.
I'm a big fan of Hourou Musuko, but I hate the anime. As do a majority of manga fans that I've met.
I recommend the manga though. It's licensed in America and Canada..

I'd bet that it was made shorter than the manga because of marketing. If you love the anime, then maybe you'll check out the Manga. I have seen the manga somewhere and flicked through it but I didnt get to read much. It might have been books-a-million.
The main character's appearance reminded me of myself when I was that age. my hair was styled the same too. Only my school uniform was somewhat different from the rest of the boys, in that I wore a blue cardigan with a teddy bear on the left breast, whereas the boys all wore sweaters. My mum even made me wear tights, though I somehow doubt it was a forced issue for me :P
I was pretty short too, even in high school. it was kind of funny because I hung out with the tallest kid in the school and there was such a height difference between us.
Then there was a girl who was the same height who used to argue that she was taller because her hair stood higher. I never did fall in love with a boy or try to kiss one, I had enough issues by then with everyone thinking I was gay without giving them unfounded proof.
I also had to do the crossdress play. It was terrifying to me because years before that I had been caught by my dad wearing my friend's white pleated skirt when I was playing at her house. And he teased the crap out of me. I didn't want to be one of the Ladies Dancing in The 12 Days of Christmas because I didn't want to be teased again. I was a pretty sensitive child back then. I'd cry when I got picked or teased or when I was being punished by my Mum and dad. But, my Aunt did tell me I was very cute and Very headstrong, so at least that hasn't changed. :P
I didn't get to actually look at the manga link you posted, but its sounds like the very same manga I read a few years ago. It was excellent and I wish there were more like it.
I spoke with Matt Thorn, the English translator for the Manga. He says that Volume 2 will be out in January. I also thanked him for translating it and he said he was sure I would like it. ^_^ I've been out to him for about a year now and he is a wonderful person to talk to who also builds Lightsabers in his spare time. ^_^
I watched the anime a few months ago. I almost never cry when watching movies and such, but it made me cry near the end.
I'll be reading the manga soon, whenever it comes in the mail....

Well, it is important to note that the culture portrayed in anime isn't always representative of Japan, not that Japan has a homogeneous culture, it is a large country with many differing attitudes. Then again they have Aya Kamikawa http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Aya_Kamikawa (http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Aya_Kamikawa) So, they are still ahead of the US by a bit it seems.

When I travelled Japan, few people paid special attention to me. I guess it is because Japanese people generally think it is rather rude to glare at a person in public. In addition, I saw a lot of young men who have long hairs and wear tight jeans. In other countries including European countries, many people, especially men, watched me. In my country, even toddlers pay attention to me. Irrelevant to LGBT, I think Japan is more diverse in appearance and fashion among youngsters.

My dear friend Azmaria is Stationed in Japan right now. She and I have become one another's main support and she's as close and as dear to me as anyone I am related to.She's my 'Sister'. I cant wait for her to come back Home. She and I started HRT at about the same time. A few Months ago, Azmaria sent me 3 kimono's. I loved them all, but one just really spoke to me. The other two I gave to my Daughters as gifts. Being Anime fans too, they were absolutely delighted. I wish I was there just because it's the last country I want to see before I die. And I have a few friends there, including Matt Thorn. I'd love to go to Nerima in Tokyo as Girl-Type Ranma and have a few photos taken there. :P

The kimono itself is actually a teal. But it never shows up like that on camera.
And you are very welcome.
I do know where you can read it online, But I dont know if anyone would like the link?
i usually read Hourou Musoku on Mangafox, but they are missing the first 4 volumes for some reason right now.
I love that manga. I really liked the anime too, just the ending was a bit murky on what was going through Nitorin's head at the time, which obviously gave a lot of people the wrong idea. I did love what the anime did for us among anime enthusiasts; Comments everywhere started out really hostile and awful and as each new episode came around, comments became more and more positive. At the end there were so many people saying that they never knew and learned a lot
I loved the manga. Layn, perhaps you can help me remember. Last I read of the manga, they were on a class trip to something like a summer camp and Nitori was stuck with a bunch of boys in a camphouse kinda thing. I would love to read that manga again.
As for ppl wondering about the anime's start point vs the mangas start point. From my recollection (granted it has been some time since I read the manga) the manga and anime start at the same point, as in that they have gotten out of grade school and are starting middle school.
However, that being said, in the manga it starts out with Nitori and Icanteverrememberhernameeventhoughshesagreatcharacter starting to realise their feelings towards their genders. Nitori starts dressing, then they start dressing together, then his friend with glasses gets involved somehow (I can't remember how) and finds he likes it too. There is alot that happens those first few weeks of school before they begin writing the play that the anime leaves out.
Also, the manga, while including the love stories and conflicts of friendship here and there, focused in my opinon alot more on Nitori's GID.
Wow, I really want to find a site to start reading this manga again from the beginning.
Okay. Here you go.

I just got my copy of volume one, and I already love it.
The book version is much classier than most mainstream manga printed in English. It's worth paying for.
Excellent! ;D
I've yet to have time to sit down and read it myself. I suppose that's why I was watching the Anime. Basically condensing the story for later reference.

You're welcome. :) Thanks for sharing the manga link, too! X3 I don't like reading manga on the computer, but this one seems like it would be worth it.
hourou musuko is worth reading. now it's up to 100 chapters, and is still being published on a monthly basis in japan. i hope it will go on for a long time, but it's boring to wait an entire month for the next chapter
i'll just use this chance to recommend a more lighthearted manga with the same transgender theme, family compo (http://www.mangafox.com/manga/family_compo/). it's about a boy who right before entering college finds out about his mother's family's darkest secret (japanese culture may not mind occasional crossdressing, but they're openminded enough to break family ties because of ->-bleeped-<-...) it's a comedy, but still manages to portray a pretty normal warmhearted family

No, i'm quite sure the manga starts out earlier, still in grad school. That's why the anime started out a bit confusing, with way too many characters being introduced right at the start. And that's where all of the flashbacks come from.
oh Family Compo! that's the other one i read religiously!
I'm slowly creeping though the anime. I just finished Episode 9. I couldnt help but silently cheer for Nitori-chan towards the end of it. All the crying I did was worth waiting for that! :D
EDIT: Make that episode 11. *sigh*

Hmmmm,
You could be very right on that. Like I said its been a while, for whatever reason I just remember them starting a new grade of school in the beginning. However, I agree fully on why the anime is so confusing at first. In the manga, most of the stuff that is reflected on as in showing the past is actually presented chronilogically (spelling?) in the manga, with much more depth.
Where did you see episode 11?

This seems to be a pretty popular thread. Maybe I should post other anime and manga. lol
I think you should. I'm always looking for more anime and manga to get into. :3
Okay, well... just gender-bending/ transformation stories? or mecha? I want to know what members on here would like to see and then whittle the enormous selection down to those categories.
Gender-bending stories would be cool. Other than that, do you know of any good horror or comedy? Or anime movies/ OVAs? That is what I'd personally be interested in. Something with good animation and a story that would be easy to get into.
And if you know of anything in English, definitely something with decent voice actors. >_>;
Idk if that helps, but maybe someone else will have some good ideas. xD
Most Gender bending stories use that as a gimmick and are usually not as serious as Hourou Musuko. Which in my opinion, makes it really stand out from the rest.
So, there is my personal favorite, an Aqua-Transsexual named Saotome Ranma. He is the main protagonist in this Manga/Anime series. Due to a curse, if he is splashed with cold water, he turns into a busty, red-headed version of himself. Hot water reverses the effect, but only until the next time. This should take you a while to get through.
http://www.animeultima.tv/watch/ranma-12-english-subbed-dubbed-online/ (http://www.animeultima.tv/watch/ranma-12-english-subbed-dubbed-online/)
That's a little upsetting, but hopefully one day there will be more serious anime about gender issues. I've been trying to come up with ideas for a web-manga/comic that deals with those kind of issues, but it's a little hard for me. I want it to be a very complex story, but not too deep. Unfortunately my drawing skills aren't the best. xD I guess I'm good enough to get by with it though... If I had a tablet it would make things so much easier.
Sorry for rambling~ XD
Anyways, I'll check that out. :) It's by Rumiko Takahashi, correct? I love Inu-Yasha, but that's the only series of her's that I've watched/read.
yes, same author. Later episodes of Ranma 1/2 had Ranma's voice change. THey used the same actor who voiced Inu Yasha. And I suspect Kagome was also voiced by the same actress who plays Ukyo in Ranma 1/2. If not Kagome, then Sango.
There are some very sucessful comics out there that dont feature amazing artwork. So dont worry. As long as you can keep readers interested in the story, then the artwork wont be as big a deal as you might think ^_^ SO I wish you the best of luck.
for manga there's of course family compo which i already mentioned. there's also one named "boku no futatsu no tsubasa" about a girl with a penis, and her struggles with romantic relationships and sex. some readers don't like the alien in it, but the girl's perfect hermaphroditism wouldn't be possible without them being involved
also "complex", a yaoi manga about two boys who get together because of or in spite of a child molester. in the beginning it looks like it will be a darks story, but turns out it portrays their entire lives after that, including 2 younger generations, and this is why i recommend it
"the day of revolution", a boy gets such a bad stomach ache that the faints on the school roof (he hangs out with the cool guys..) and when he wakes up in the hospital he gets the rather unbelievable diagnosis that nothings wrong. it's just that he's actually a girl
"level e" (also anime), the best alien comedy i've read/watched, main character being an evil genius who saves earth on a whim. it also has an episode about a transsexual, but it won't be fun if i spoil what actually happens with that person
"1/2 prince", a comedy about a girl who plays a guy in a virtual reality where it shouldn't be possible to be other than your birth sex. there are funny complications because she has to keep her real identity secret, and because her personality changes a lot in the game
"tenshi na konamaiki" (also anime), about a boy who wishes he was a 'man among men', and gets the exact opposite. not a happy girl, but good comedy material
"otomen", about a girly boy who's been forced by his mom to act manly after his father left to become a woman, and a girl who acts like the typical slightly dense (in romantic matters) shounen hero. they're not transgender, just not fitting into their expected gender roles
"bremen", the guys in the band actually accept her fully as a girl. they even save her from a father who tries to force her into a male gender role
other gender bender: ouran high school host club (also anime), girl got game, pretty face, love in the mask, otome wa boku ni koi->-bleeped-<-eiru (also anime), boku ni natta watashi, kaze hikaru, ranma 1/2, princess princess, hanazakari no kimitachi e, chameleon jail, saver
Excellent list Taka. Thank you ^_^
So there you have it, a pretty comprehensive listing of titles with a trans/ gender-bending/ intersex theme.
Most of the titles I have heard of, but not looked at yet. I have a zip file with a lot of these title in it.
Oh! Another good gender change manga is Futuba-kun Change. It's about a boy who enters puberty to find he changes sex when he gets excited or aroused. He soon learns that everyone in his family changes like him.
that's by no means a comprehensive list. here are more gender bender titles i have read:
marugoto anju gakuen, never give up, nononono, boy of the female wolf, divine melody, akane-chan overdrive, himitsu no himegimi uwasa no ouji, idol shopping, return, tokyo crazy paradise
actually i don't really recommend any of the korean titles. no matter how many i read i'm always without fail disappointed by how weak the initially strong female lead turns out to be. but many girls seem to like them, so i can't not mention them
This is about as comprehensive a list as I could find, using the ANN theme search. I'd suspect it's got nearly every title, since they sort of make it their job to keep up with anime and manga. ^_^;

Unfortunately, it's just a list. If you want descriptions, you'll have to actually click through the titles to read the plot summaries.
I've seen this anime and thought it really touching since the gender issues are a real-deal focus instead of a plot gimmick (as said in another post). It also brings up a sad point about how differently MTF and FTM kids are treated in current culture. :-\
Yes it does. Especially in the later episodes. I'm not going to explain what I'm talking about because I dont want to spoil it. Suffice to say that... you will either cry your eyes out or come very close to it.
I cried.

not my favorite type of list. it listed 'bremen' as crossdressing when the girl is clearly transsexual. actually, the only times she uses the true strength of her male body is when people call her okama (crossdresser/->-bleeped-<-). cause she's a girl, not a guy in female clothing. and it only includes the tags you searched for?
also, it includes titles which aren't recommendable for minors. actually the ones with 'pico' in them aren't recommendable for anyone
for gender bender manga, i think this is the most comprehensive (over 1000 titles) list you can find is this one at mangaupdates (http://www.mangaupdates.com/series.html?genre=Gender%20Bender&). it includes all tags for the different mangas so it's easer to find what you'd (not) want to read, which is good since probably most gender benders are hentai

The manga starts in fifth grade, the anime starts in seventh (the beginning of middle school). The anime finishes during the middle of a play, at the end of volume 10, but the manga is on volume twelve already; the characters are in high school. Chapter 101 just came out in Japan..
Anyway, I know of an intersex related (http://manga.animea.net/aiesu.html) manga. I read it twice, it's pretty good the first few chapters but then it switches to being about one character.
I've also read a shojo (http://www.mangafox.com/manga/ai_no_shintairiku/%20fluffy) manga with a trans protagonist. It's a generic title but adorable in my opinion.
There's a cute Pokemon manga where one of the protagonists is transgendered, but I'd only recommend it for Pokemon fans and its hard to find online.
After School Nightmare (http://www.mangafox.com/manga/after_school_nightmare/) is sort of about being intersex.. But it's a psychological mind-screw, like Evangelion.
I know of several manga with transgendered characters actually.. I'd list a Tvtropes page with a good list of characters, but Tvtropes
will ruin your life is notoriously addicting.
I just finished to through chapter 100, been reading it over the last few days.
Only problem I've found with this series is I had to jump forward a little bit through some of the side stories. Other then that it's been a rough read. I can't put my finger on it but there's something about the story I don't like or it's hard not to think about my middle school life and the things I wished I could have had differently growing up.
I'll probably keep up with the chapters as they come out on the mango lists (been reading a lot of manga on my android phone lately).
I've just started watching this, and it's really blowing me away - probably because I can relate to both the characters (since the woman I am is a tomboy - it's never simple...)
Watched it a few months back and did enjoy it. ^-^
I expect the books are much more in-depth and interesting - that's usually the way (I'll find out soon, just ordered the first couple :)).
The manga are translated by a friend of mine named Matt Thorn. He said he knew I would be very interested in this manga, which was one of the reasons he is doing it. :D I feel very honored by that comment.
Sweet - I read a quote somewhere from him about the quality of the manga story. I'm a bit daunted that they're up to 13 books now (and rising!) but only the first 4 are published in English so far, so I can save up :).
There is a part of me who wants to watch this show all the way through. The rest of me finds it far too painful to even get through it. Not because it's bad. Not at all. Because it hits me very hard emotionally when I see I am failing in my transition. It was hard getting through venus envy and the others I read. Maybe I just suck at this. I will try to give it another go eventually.
I watched it all - the ending is quite "open-ended", since it's a diluted version of the book story (which still hasn't finished developing). It is quite painful to watch, in places - for me it was mainly the helplessness the kids had sometimes in the face of the prejudice around them, especially that of the adults. But they come through.
I watched Wandering Son aswell. It was great, loved the art style and the way the story was told. My heart stopped though when Nitori went to school dressed..
There was the one scene in Episode 1 that really brought back some childhood memories that made me cry. I dont want to spoil it but it's the scene where he runs away...
I thought "How many others have experienced that and been made to feel so ashamed?"
there are other scenes too, but none that hit me like that did.
I just saved myself from spending a lot of money - I was going to get the first few books, but book one is out of print, so I backed off :).
Really??
I'll talk with Matt Thorn and find out where you can pick up a copy of volume 1. I'd hate fore you to miss out on such a wonderful series Padma.
I can get one if I'm prepared to fork out twice the asking price (at least). I'm sure it'll be back in print soon, it's very popular. But thanks anyway (and it's probably a good thing if I don't have something else to spend a lot of money on right now ::)).
I loved watching Wandering Son. The story is so sad, realistic and emotional. I might even start watching it again.
reviving topic to point you to a crossdressing manga with an interesting twist
nicoichi (http://www.mangaupdates.com/series.html?id=6798)
unfortunately only 21 chapters are translated yet
it kind of reminds me of my owns situation in a funny but also slightly uncomfortable way
Looks pretty good actually. ^_^
Thank you for sharing.
I'd recommend watching Kashimashi-girl meets girl:

It takes a few episodes to get into it, but once you do, the end will make you cry!

Well, it is important to note that the culture portrayed in anime isn't always representative of Japan, not that Japan has a homogeneous culture, it is a large country with many differing attitudes. Then again they have Aya Kamikawa http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Aya_Kamikawa (http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Aya_Kamikawa) So, they are still ahead of the US by a bit it seems.
well I never been to the US so I can't speak for that but as I see it Japan isnt really GLBT friendly. it depends on what you compare it with.
Japan is very diffrent and opposite in many ways is my impression, for a time it made me belive they where extremly GLBT friendly but as time went I just notice they where diffrent in there culture, way of living and gender roles, because of that you cant really compare if its GLBT friendly easly cause there diffrent things to compare with.
Japan is very safe in many ways and general japanese people are very polite and helpfull, if you forget money on the street or in the store there is a very big risk nobody will take it but make sure to hand to you. this also means you can easly walk hand in hand as 2 men without anyone would shout at you or do something hurtfull.
on the other hand theres alot of indirect discrimination. as you dont talk openly about sex you dont either talk openly about GLBT so many people are pretty ignorant and dont know much about it. I belive this is japans biggest problem.
next time going to japan im diffently looking more up for this, I have only spoked to a few japanese people about this topic, my japanese is rather bad and as I said its not really a topic you bring up so easly.

For the manga, hourou musuko and aistu is pretty much my favorite.
I agree that you have to read it. the anime is okay but I feel the mangakas power is to give the character personalety who seams natural and follow them, you do that alot more in 12 books than in 12 episodes.
so yeah its logical.

Well even when drawing skills is pretty good you can also have something without.
Currently im doing a comic with my friend, with fear of sounding too full of myself I must admit my drawing skils is alot better. But it dosent matter so much cause his great with tecnoligy which I sucks + we need someone to do the text, colouring and all those small details, and he likes to do that alot more than I So I bet it will work out.
