We Don't Have A Word For "Apple"

Welcome to the world of people who don't conform to western societal sex and gender norms, exclusive of non-heterosexual sexual orientation, we don't have an overarching term equivalent to the term apple.

Oh, we have the term transgender that is meant to encompass a broad spectrum of identities under an umbrella term, but the reality is that just as every lesbian, gay, bisexual, and transgender (LGBT) identified person doesn't identify as a member of LGBT community — for a myriad of reasons — not everyone who could fall under the umbrella term transgender identifies as transgender — also for a myriad of reasons.

Apple is very strictly gendered in Italian! Male for the tree, female for the fruit ;D

All this confirmation business is beginning to worry me. Is it srs or you sit at the back of the bus?

For the author to imply that these people are not living normal lives has no basis.

The author has long since abandoned any grasp they might have had on 'normal' -remember that the author was the same person that thinks they should be entitled to an F because they were castrated.

From The Awful German Language by Mark Twain:

QuoteEvery noun has a gender, and there is no sense or system in the distribution; so the gender of each must be learned separately and by heart. There is no other way. To do this one has to have a memory like a memorandum-book. In German, a young lady has no sex, while a turnip has. Think what overwrought reverence that shows for the turnip, and what callous disrespect for the girl. See how it looks in print -- I translate this from a conversation in one of the best of the German Sunday-school books:

"Gretchen.
    Wilhelm, where is the turnip?
Wilhelm.
She has gone to the kitchen.
Gretchen.
Where is the accomplished and beautiful English maiden?
Wilhelm.
It has gone to the opera."

To continue with the German genders: a tree is male, its buds are female, its leaves are neuter; horses are sexless, dogs are male, cats are female -- tomcats included, of course; a person's mouth, neck, bosom, elbows, fingers, nails, feet, and body are of the male sex, and his head is male or neuter according to the word selected to signify it, and not according to the sex of the individual who wears it -- for in Germany all the women either male heads or sexless ones; a person's nose, lips, shoulders, breast, hands, and toes are of the female sex; and his hair, ears, eyes, chin, legs, knees, heart, and conscience haven't any sex at all. The inventor of the language probably got what he knew about a conscience from hearsay.

Irregardless of anyone's opinions regarding the above author's grasp on reality, there are women in our community here at Susan's who have had orchies, and who've changed their legal documents to F (in states that allowed it). Many FTMs don't get bottom surgeries, and they have changed their legal documents to M.

and that does not mean that those of us who BELIEVE in a binary construct have to agree with those practices...although it certainly seems that SOME around here are opposed to the open discussion of binary constructs and the concerns we have about the deconstruction of that societal component.  And it is precisely that attempt at stifling commentary or opinion that illustrates why some of us DO get upset about the efforts to shove those who had a transsexual medical condition under that insipid transgender umbrella.

I'd second that, Zythra. Absolutist intransigence drove me away from this site a few a years ago. I'm genuinely shocked and appalled.

Labels are for clothes in my opinion.  After digging into a bit of family history I have found that 6 million or so of my apparently distant relatives were found to have the wrong label, and discarded as unnecessary.
I'll take "Woman, Made in Australia" , if I have to have one, and leave it at that.
Karen.

Mimpi and everyone,

I apologize for my outburst. It was out of line, undeserved, and out of character. Even if I have some pent-up anger left over from recent debates, you didnt deserve the level of response to your comments.

I'm sorry. Val

Thanks for your apology, Val!

Apples and Oranges?

I like the color Orange... So I'm going to identify as an Orange... Well, actually I'm a Peach who is attracted to Oranges... But have no problem with anyone who wishes to identify as an Apple, or a Pear, or a Strawberry, or a Plum, or even *Gasp* a Tomato etc...

Watch out for the Banana's though, I hear they're a tricky bunch

:-* :-* :-* Love you all  :)

And, Why is a carrot more orange than an Orange?

Well now you've opened up a can of worms, and so ensues the debate over Keratin and Vitamin C and what does Odwalla juice, SoBe and/or Jack La Lane have to do with it? Not to mention what shade of Orange strikes your fancy? Is it a rather bright, light opaque orange or more of a burnt sienna?
