Other cruel and unusual punishment cases not involving blood exposure have been heard in several Midwestern states. In Indiana, where an inmate received an electrical shock while working as an electrician in a prison, a judge in 2004 found in favor of jail officials, but the decision was overturned on appeal.

In Ohio, inmates complained in 1991 about the conditions of their confinement, and in Wisconsin in 1994, a transsexual inmate was placed in the general prison population. Both cases went to the U.S. Supreme Court, which issued guidelines that put the burden on inmates to prove that prison officials knowingly put them in situations that could cause serious harm.
