Transgender visibility is about to get a major boost on television this fall, following the announcement that author and activist Chaz Bono is joining the fun-filled and highly rated ABC program Dancing With the Stars. Starting September 19, Chaz will join 11 other celebs in putting their fancy footwork to the test on the ballroom floor.
Many media outlets and personalities have celebrated his inclusion on the show, and offered strong words of support. Unfortunately some anti-LGBT activists are reacting with hurtful messages and dangerous misinformation about the trans community, and encouraging viewers not to vote for Chaz simply for having the courage to be who he is.

And Chaz has survived week 1. Ron Artest has gone by the wayside. He seems to be safe for the next few shows, but if he does slip up, I bet dollars to doughnuts that he'll be booted because the Dancing With the Stars Audience can be very fickle at times.
And Chaz is no longer on DWTS. It's nice to see evil win out on this show with Nancy Grace still in the field. I guess that nip-slip a few weeks ago worked in her favor.
He got a LOT farther than I thought he would, honestly. I didn't feel that way because of him or his ability, but because of the obvious barriers he had to deal with and all the people so fervently committed to him staying silent and out of their sight.
I'm hoping someone more prominent than myself will point out the disproportionate amount of worry people had about him being on the show, when compared to how much controversy (or lack thereof) he actually brought to the show. I mean, people acted like it was the end of the world, and it ended up being just like any other TV show.
