Title: So I'm getting over being XY
Post by: Bird on September 28, 2011, 11:41:44 PM
I'm not going to write much, but this is a huge step ahead, psychologically. I think I am finally mentally accepting this.

Accepting that I can't change the fact I am XY and on that ground, genetically, I'm not female. I think this is a important thing for me, because it wil allow me to remain calm and accepting about things on my body I can't change.

I wouldn't worry too much about XY or XX, or any other combination of chromosomes.  They don't neccessarily have a bearing on your apparent sex in every case anyway.  Check the Wiki, lots of variations are possible.
The main thing is who lives inside your head. That's where our identity is, so it is the only reference point we really have to be concerned about.
Karen.

Hi bird,

Good you are accepting; but chromosomes are just a bunch of nucleotides that code genes and mainly junk. And we are reasonably clueless about how the proteins they code for do what they do.

Live well and Happily.

I'll confess it's not something that ever particularly worried me, partly for the reasons Karen and Cindy mentioned, partly because it's something I can't change - I'd rather concentrate and worry about the things I can change.. But if it was something that concerned you, it's good that you've found peace with it.. :)

Im human.  Ive never even seen my chromosones.   Not to invalidate your comment,  life is what you make of it, I just know who I am and what I am have been two different things for a bit.

I have no idea what my chromosomes look like. I've never been tested.

This helps me care less about the XY/XX thing: http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Androgen_insensitivity_syndrome (http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Androgen_insensitivity_syndrome)

If it's something that's been bothering you a lot, then it's really good that it's not bothering you any more, Bird.

There's a combination of genes within the 46XY which produces the 46XY female and she comes in various types.  Intersexuality does not have to be chromosonal nor does it have to be a disorder, so much unnecessary surgery has been performed, when surgery is a personal decision.

Okay if it's any consolation I will give you a biology lession.

Females strictly speaking only have one X chromosome.

The X chromosome contains many highly important genes so important that duplicating them causes serious problems and would kill any mammal.

Females of all mammals deactivate their second X chromosome.

The Y chromosome contains ->-bleeped-<- all really. It has instructions on howto make a sperm cell and the SRY gene whitch triggers the male developmental pathway invivo.

Their is a tiny "Pesudo autosomal region" on the top of both X and Y chromosomes whitch is exactly the same. but if your missing one of them you get turners syndrome and if you have a 3rd you get klienfelters syndrome.

So yeah basically in terms of gene expression accociated with the chromosomes males and females really the same it's only a single genes difference "SRY" that actually defines it and yes deleting the SRY gene on the Y chromosome makes natal XY females.

I believe the Y chromosome is a deformity of the second X chromosome.

Yea, it bothers me a bunch.

I guess being TG bothers me as well, but I'm getting over it. One day I am going to leave this town I am in and go into such a deep stealth mode not even submarines or deep water robots will be deeper.

Totally erase my past kind of thing.

If there's one thing I've learned is that you will always end up having your past resurface at some point, and you have to learn to deal with it.  Someone might know, someone might recognize, you might see your old name on old paperwork or something.  I mean really.  It's not a big deal, but just be prepared.

If I am saying I can do it, it is because I can.

XY is extremely important to me.  It is the closest thing I have to a determinant of what I am supposed to be regardless of how I feel - like a guidepost telling me how I should be.  It is one of my great barriers to transition because I feel if I did transition, I'd be putting a mask over the reality that I am and was meant to be XY.

I realize not everyone feels this way, but for me it is important.
