I do not bind or pack, but I can pass for a guy most of the time. I mainly use the ladies room because I am hesitant about my passing, but almost everytime I am in womens room, I get very weird looks. I really want to start going into the guys room, but I'm not sure if I would be obvious.
I have heard that mens rooms are a lot less clean, and I am borderline OCD, so its the main reason I keep going into the ladies room.
What about you guys?
I'd probably get kicked out or something. XD I stopped using the women's room when I started getting weird glares and whispers.
In my experience, men's bathrooms aren't more disgusting.
Haven't been in a women's room for 5+ years now... and if I tried to go into one now, I'd probably have the crap beat out of me.
I'm OCD and a major hypochondriac... men's restrooms, in general, are about 3x cleaner than women's.
Same as Silver I stopped after the weird looks. Havent used the women's room more than once or twice in almost five years.
I find the mens room to be cleaner. Some women are very gross in the bathroom with where they leave their feminine products. Only grossness I see is men who can't aim so I just find another stall.
Only when I really have to go and there is no other option. Luckily at work we have several gender neutral restrooms and I ALWAYS use one of them. I don't think I pass very well most of the time, so I still use the womens room. I always feel really awkward and try to get in and out as quickly as possible and hope no one sees me. No one has ever said anything to me, but I have definitely gotten some double takes and odd looks. Since all I have to do is talk for people to figure out that im technically female, I don't think I would ever have any real problems.
I always want to use the mens, but It makes me really nervous (unless its a single stall, then I don't care).
I typically use the men's restroom --- I am not on hormones. If there is a bunch of young guys who appear drunk I use the women's ... but I have found the men's restroom are just as clean --- they just smell
I don't use public bathrooms, but if you pass I think you should use the men's. At work the women's is definitely worse then the men's. The women will squat and completely miss the bowl. That's for pee, poop, and and blood. There also are a few who decide to paint the stall red. The men's room sometimes has ants.
I've been using the mens toilets for almost a year now. I just can't imagine using the female toilets. My doctor even told me if I was still using the girls I would probably cause a fuss or something. Like I was at the Gold Coast on the weekend with my sisters and we had to go to the toilets. The ones we found were coded and we couldn't get in. Some lady came and let my sisters in the females but then she looked at me and said "you are going to need the men's, I will open that for you." I thought that was pretty cool.
I've never had the other guys say anything to me but generally here the guys don't speak to each other when they are in there anyway. As for cleanliness, sometimes the guys toilets can be atrocious. Pee all over the floor, it smells, but thats only certain toilets and depending on where you are too.
I bind, I occasionally pack, and I've been on testosterone for 10 months. I still use the women's restrooms because I'm seen as female most of the time. I usually try to find a gender neutral bathroom but those can be hard to find.
Men's restrooms are so much cleaner in my experience. Men's urine smells stronger, but urine is sterile anyway unlike used feminine products. It depends on where you live, but if you pass reasonably well, you should be fine. Men try to ignore each other as much as possible in the restroom.
I still use the womens. But I'm really early on in my transition so....I don't pass well enough for the mens.
I am.. 100% positive I'd be stared at awkwardly if I tried to go into the women's bathroom. Last time I went into one, I was working in a place where I wasn't out, so I /had/ to use the women's restroom and that was quite a few months ago.
I havent used a womens room since my freshman year of college. I would get screamed out if I did now.
but as I have noticed, mens rooms are less gross then womens, mens rooms may have more pee odor, or pee on the floors. womens rooms smell like death (period blood smells disgusting) and there is blood everywhere and smelly pads and tampons.. GROSS. and just think, if you want to sit on the toilet, you know that not many people have sat on it, women sit on all the toilets, men only sit on the toilets once in a while.
I generally don't use public restrooms, ever. But, sometimes when I'm waiting for a friend in the lady's room I get odd looks, and I'm not on T yet. I'll get the double take and mostly since I don't pass they just go on ignoring me. I'd love to use the men's though. But I can't use bathrooms with stalls, singular public bathrooms are fine.
I don't have a problem at work bc I work in a nursing home and all the bathrooms are unisex and are generally clean, but I agree with many of you about some females being gross about feminine products and blood. bleh. :P

I try to avoid public restrooms. I still use the ladie's atm. I only pass 50/50.
I'm forced to use the ladies' at school which is making me terribly uncomfortable 'cause we have 16 year old students as well so I'm just seen as a young, small, boy. Making the whole toilet experience something I can stress about all day long.

I used to pass sporadically so would flit between using both bathrooms depending on how well I passed on any given day. Much like everybody else I officially made the switch after I started passing more consistently.
i was still using the girls room at school when i shaved my head, i got tons of weird looks and i got called out by a teacher once she said "excuse me this is the girls room" "exactly" i said. i wasnt out at the time but i knew i was trans, the whole thing pissed me off. now i only use guys rooms even at school but i use the single stall mens. its the cleanest bathroom ever because only theater kids use it. BTW i pass almost 100% of the time, but most people think im younger then i am.

man its a freaking toilet I dont want to make a big issue about it but I do feel like I belong to the boy toilet even thought it stinks more.
if people give me nasty comments then I just answer them back ignore them or ask why they even care,
mostly people cant even come up with a got explanation why girl and guys room should be seperated,

I stopped using the ladies' room after officially going full-time (changing my name) - I saw that as part of the RLE, so didn't make sense for me otherwise living as male to still nip into the women's. Apart from the church I've been going to for years, although as time went on I felt more and more out of place in there - not to mention low since pre-T I wasn't getting any weird looks from the girls in there -_- Pretty sure I would now, though...
And yes, in my experience the men's are cleaner. Some stink more due to the urinals, although the ones at work have freshener blocks to stave off the smell. My big issue with some of them is the lack of lock on the door - or lack of door full stop; must remember to bring snee-kee with me when going out..
I think the last time I've used a women's washroom was in April when I went t a lesbian film festival wit my ex... I passed as a lesbian quite easily and seeing as they don't like men going on particular days I just used the women's.
I just feel extremely awkward in the women's. Always have, but regardless, now I not only feel out of place but I look it too. I'm not on T but somehow I can pass extremely well. The thing I like about the men's is that there's absolutely no talking. My voice is the least passable thing about me so it makes it the easiest place to pass 100%.
Sometimes I have to... Because this is a small town and I shop at the same places, so, people know I'm "supposed" to go into the women's room.
nope not anymore, ever since i get weird looks or people saying this is the woman's rooms i started using the mens and im pre-everything and i don't always pack. and if u pass most of the time like u said and getting weird looks in the ladys i think it time for you to use the men.
and i do agree with what most people say about the cleanness and the smell, also guys dont go in there to social/hang about unlike the ladys, men just go in do what they need to go for and then out again no talking or any eye contact.
I stoped useing the ladys when i was about 17 im now 23 but i rarely use public bathrooms anyways not cuz of any passing stuff just cuz there durty as ->-bleeped-<-.. but when im that much in need for a piss and no 2 then i use the mens. When i was about 17 years of age i walked into the ladys and a women starting yelling for me to get out. was funny. i never used a packer or a binder and still got kicked out this was before i even told anyone i was trans. lol.. but now i use the mens and dont get anyone look or ask or anythink i just do my business and move on lol
I can't. I tried a few months ago for whatever reason, and absolutely panicked. Felt like I was gonna puke, ran across the hall to the men's room and pissed fine.
Guys rooms in my experiance are cleaner. Guys just go in, pee and leave but girls seem to cake makeup all over and pee on the seats. We also have the added advantage of standing up so there is even less ick factor.
I'm still only living as part-time (mostly to ->-bleeped-<- with people >:'D), but I use both restrooms whenever I actually use public restrooms. Everyone has already spoken about the disgustingness of women's restrooms (which I still have nightmares about ;_;...), but nobody's mentioned the last reasons those things are a bacteria playground. Women tend to be the ones who change the diapers and take kids into the bathroom with them. So yeah, combine periods and squatting with diaper changing and small kids having accidents, and you get janitors who cry themselves to sleep at night.

I use men's rooms 99% of the time. I only use the ladies at this nightclub that I'm a regular at.
Simply because so many people there have known me for years and I don't care to out myself to them. It sucks but I'd rather piss in the ladies than get bashed.
I'm a glorified traveling janitor. Which restroom is worst depends on the environment the restroom is in.
As to which I use, whichever is closest as do all the guys I work with since we are normally the only ones in the building. In public I have to use the men's, face fur gives you away and I found out long ago before T that women are vicious when it comes to guarding 'their' bathroom..
I stopped using the girls bathroom in 6th grade before I even passed as male. I just held it in until I got home or something. I've used the mens bathroom twice since I started passing (about a year ago) and if I absolutely HAVE to piss in public, I will try to find a family/unisex bathroom. The only reason I don't use the guys bathroom often is because I'm terrified of being outed.
I try not to use public bathrooms but when I have to go, I use a unisex or a single room bathroom. I can't pee in womens or mens stall bathrooms.
I don't think we have unisex bathrooms around here but I always always always get stared at in the girls rooms. Girls rooms are very dirty and I'm cautious anyway so I'm going to start using the guys room and save the hassle of being stared at in college on tuesday.
Do you guys have your professors (or employers) refer to you by your chosen name? Or do they call you what they want? All of my profs call me Jacqueline and I don't think they'd understand if I told them to call me Jacq.

Just tell them what you want to be called, through email or in person. They may be more understanding than you think.
I use the womens restroom. I don't have the confidence yet to use the mens room. I've been in the mens room a couple of times but when no one is in there. Whenever I go in the womens restroom I always put my head down and don't make eye contact with anyone b/c I feel embarrassed, especially when there's a cute girl in there, it's uncomfortable.

I second this, after High School, I've learned many women who use public restrooms are pigs. (Sorry ladies)
The worst I think you'll find in the mens' is some kid will think it's funny to crap in a urinal.
Anyway, I still use the women's. I'm becoming more and more uneasy about it. I think once I start binding I might have to use the mens, but I really want to stp and I'm not really "there" yet as far as my skill level, haha.
My concern is, what happens when I'm in transition, and I don't pass enough to use the mens, but pass too much to use the womens?
If there is a high chance of me being seen going into/out of the men's bathroom by someone I'm not out to and it matters(family), then I'll use the women's.
If I'm in a hurry, I use whichever has the shortest line.
If neither of the above is true, I'll use the men's.
Most of the time, though, I avoid public restrooms just for the ick and idiot factor. I have actually been diagnosed with OCD, but that's not why I find them disgusting. I haven't used a bathroom at school for 8 years. I have found that men's restrooms tend to be cleaner. I bind every day, but I've never packed or used an STP of any sort; I just go in the stall, but I'm never worried about not passing because I just walk in with a bored/nonchalant expression/walk and do my business without looking anywhere or saying anything. No one's ever given me crap about going in either bathroom.
Well....can't say much for cleanliness in university men's rooms...I rarely use the restrooms on-campus....but if I do use them, I always use the men's.
The thought of walking into a women's room just gives me an awkward feeling. I do not belong there. (not to mention, living full time, if a single one of my classmates saw me, I'd be a dead man)
I'm not on T yet, but I pass pretty well. If nothing else, I come of neutral, so often people feel like they finally have an answer when I walk into the men's room. (so said a random Homestucker at AWA xD)
But generally the men's rooms anywhere else are just fine. Cleaner actually, mostly because guys don't do much in there. If you feel self conscious, get an stp (you can make one with a medicine spoon that works pretty damn well). It doesn't do anything for you appearance-wise, but it'll make you feel a lot more confident.

Considering that I work in a retail store and clean the bathrooms often, this is COMPLETELY true of my store at least. It's surprising.

Personally, I switch it up because I'm still in that stage where I can pass either way (if I pull it off right). If I'm out somewhere looking particularly dudeish then I'll hop to the mens restroom.. Last time I went to the mall I was switching out the rings in my snakebites and behind me this older woman came toddling in. She stared at me for a minute then left. Two minutes later she came back in all embarrassed looking--it happens often. So, to save the women figures from confusion when I'm in a place like a mall, or a store then the guys bathroom is where it's at.
Nope if I did I wud be chased out I'm sure... I even use a STP now so I fit in perfectly, cuz I hate having to pee like a girl...
When people are starring at u in a toilet giving u the looks as if ur in the wrong place, I believe it's time to move to the men's.. :-)

Some places (malls, rest stops, straight nightclubs, high schools) men's rooms are usually cleaner. Some places (gay clubs, stadiums, bars) women's rooms are usually cleaner. Basically a good rule of thumb is that if you're in a space where drunk men outnumber women by a very large margin, the men's room is probably going to be a mess. Otherwise, the women's will probably be worse.

That's actually how I first used the men's room. Just walked in, asked where the bathrooms were and the guy at the counter handed me the keys to the men's room. Been using it every since.
I don't pass or anything in the least, but I've walked into the guys bathroom and gone before without any issues, it does make me really nervous though
