I always bring my camera when I'm out walking. I bring it to a lot of places, even to the mall shopping.
I have quite the picture collection of 'shiny things'. Of course my camera and computer and printer are my shiniest things.

As Ativan says bring what you like doing and what interests you into what you do. If you like ponies there's a career there: Pony trekking, Pony Clubs work for some people. Haven't seen any 'My Little Pony' commercials recently on TV, you should approach the manufacturers and propose a new campaign to widen their customer base and increase product market penetration. ;)

It goes without saying (hehe yet I do) it depends on the person but for me, I'm purposely
going for a job that doesn't have a dress code and where I'm not going to care if I leave it.
I'm going for a manufacturing job at this point. My ADD is severe and only treated with a sedative
for years. Either I hyper focus or I'm like you - "shiny thing!!"
btw - if you're really worried about the distractedness and thoughts of being stuck in a job for years and years, the
best advice I can give is try to not think about anything long term.
Mmmm....maybe think of it one day at a time.

Maybe expand that out to an hour if possible.

I see things in a very big way, like I can see where each part goes, not only in the puzzle but also in the world, universe and time.
Which is not very helpful for productivity, when I'm figuring out what will happen to a thing I'm holding in my hand in 100 years.
But when I'm programming, every line of the code becomes a world into itself. It's so full of meaning and so specific, in a way, in such a manner that each line must be perfect.

Of course this is not what I want, what I want is to spend my days in dream-space wondering about the many possibilities before the realization, designing, giving meaning to the faceless objects which make my existence.

But people won't pay me to play in this other world, they want to do things in this world, and they want it NOW.
This is why I'm getting a job change.
Today, I'm considering the possibility of a job involving motorcycle driving, like, pizza delivery or such.
Motorcycle courier jobs are far too dangerous, did one year in London as a teenager and two in Italy as an adult. Apart from having sun damage to my forearms and face from that and having been a competitive cyclist there are the crashes which inevitably happen and they really hurt. The stress levels are off the scale as well.
Agree with you about programming, my son's a programmer but he loves the banality of it all having had crazy parents.
If you have imagination, which you seem to have, why waste it like that. You are young, how about going back to study something very different that lets you be who you are?

So you like making stuff? Do that and sell it, if one puts one's mind to it anyone can, especially now with eBay and Facebook.
Like I mentioned I did for years with no training, no university education, in a different country, in a different language and it worked. Even went selling in countries where I couldn't speak the language.
Anything you make will be different, one of the good things about us being different is that we think in different ways from the average person and that sells. That last point is very, very true.
Can be anything, paintings, jewellery, sculpture, tables, lamps etc. Even motorcycles for that matter. You seem creatively frustrated, give it a go. You can keep your present job and do that on the side for a while.
Be a pilot. Or ship captain. Truck driver. Heavy Equipment Operator. Hang glider instructor. Ticket taker at the theater.
Just tell people that your a 'Job Professional', and ask them what kind of job do they have. If it sounds like fun, take the job for a day or two.
I'm a software engineer for a company that makes an MMO game engine other developers license.
Sometimes I like my job, sometimes it's dull and frustrating.
Funny thing is, I got here after doing much more creative game work, writing background material and making spells and items and monsters for a fantasy game. This pays better and the management is more sane and stable, but I miss that aspect of it.

You are describing my situation 4 years ago and I guess till now. I always liked the big picture but if I delved into something I would go in so much detail into it it would be amazing.
So 4 years ago I had a talk with my uncle and he suggested that since I was planning on doing a PhD and it is not until a year later, that I would teach at a local university.
I liked the idea and I taught for a year. Of course I wanted to do research so I tolerated the teaching position. The head of the department was a little bit of a d---h--- and I got frustrated with the position. I realized that I didn't want to do a PhD and I switched to another field. I still think that I could teach and maybe do some research in this field.
Try teaching and maybe research on the side until you really know what you want to do.
What do you think?

I'm not sure about teaching, teaching what to whom ?
I have many things to teach, but I dont know if there's people who would want to know what I know. Besides there's the whole "diplomas and papers" thing, which I have none of.
I've been as good as the best but I have no papers to speak of. I'm self taught at everything.
I can do computers, watercolors, sculpting, sales, motorcycle maintenance... So on
research I'm not sure what would imply, nor how does one go about getting a job in research... would you mind telling me more about it?
I used to do Research and Development for a few companies. Just state your desire to be working at any level in any field. You want to learn as you work, grow into the ranks of scientists. Most places are looking for people who can work on the fly, have an eye for details. It can be fun, I tie died my lab coat one day, also use to sit and BS with the CEO (he liked my coffee I think). Showed him a high pressure air gun I made from scrounging parts. It shot hypo needles into the concrete blocks from 39ft away. He was impressed.

The research job I got was through the teaching job at the university.
You don't have to start with a research position.
You can teach computer programming. You seem really passionate about it. If you don't have the degree (and if you have the money) you can take a programming course and then sit for an exam for the certification. I took a course recently and I loved it and I am planning on sitting for the exam and maybe later on be able to teach with it.
Taking a course is really good. I enjoyed it a lot and if you find the right course for you, you will like it.

I think that as far as creative pursuits are concerned, you often have to do what you love for free before you get paid for it.
But if you really commit to doing something creative for free, and sharing it with as many people as possible, just because you love it, chances are it will eventually turn into something you get paid for. At least if you work hard and have the right attitude about it.
And if it doesn't pay off financially, at the very least you'll have more fun and learn more than you would staying home after work like most people do.

the bad thing about getting money over doing things you love, is that more often than not the money takes out the fun from the activity.
I can't paint for a comission, and I struggle with programming for a job. Though I'm getting more luck with the programming since it's actually
less creative...

I decided early on to avoid setting myself up to rely on my creativity for income because I didn't want to have to compromise my aesthetics in order to get paid. I have questioned that decision at times, as I've seen people I went to school with go on to have successful careers in film and music. But I also really appreciate the balance my life has - I have a career in information science where I use my analytical abilities, and I write songs and perform them and get to have total creative freedom because I'm not in it for the money. Of course it would be nice to eventually earn some income from music (as opposed to breaking even), but at this point I'm happy to simply do what I love and be part of a community of creative people.
The real reason that most people don't make it in creative stuff is that they don't want to work hard enough to make their stuff really that good. It takes years, if not decades to do so. It tends to be a long, long way from your creative ideas, to a solid creative reality.
That and they always give the old person a break, sometimes just for showing up. ;)

Still working on this, I'm nearly there, very nearly.
It's a long hard road to see through to the end.
Helping to run a pub, which is what I do and I love it. I'm a barmaid, a barman, a porter, a cellarman, a chambermaid,, a waiter, a waitress, a cleaning lady, a furniture mover, an odd job man, a seamstress, a cook. Both sexes equally, and I'm just the same me for any of them and nobody queries it. If they did I might even have to do another job which is very rare - a chucker-out.

You've got a point there, Teema, but what a person in my sort of job needs is a hidey-hole where he go for a snooze and nobody can find him to get him to do something. And I've got one, but I'm not going to tell you where it is. :)
BTW, I've just seen that when I typed this out, there was the pronoun problem coming up. He? Him? That's what I wrote without thinking. What else could I do? I suppose I could have written "they, them" . I see there is a thread on this on this site. I haven't joined it, but I think the only solution for us here is to use the pronouns of our physical state. I just lifted my skirt and looked underneath, just to check. and it has to be "he". Small, and sometimes more of a nuisance than anything else, but "he".
I settle for 'he' also. It feels a bit like a little white lie, but is easier than asking people to use neutral pronouns that sound odd evn to myself.
When I went to find Zadia, and I did, I couldn't understand what she was trying to say. She was annoyed at me, but we had had words through emails that I needed to be clarified. I felt I had done something wrong. Maybe I did, I never did find out.
I got a glimpse of her world, the people mostly. She is married to one of the handsomest man I have ever seen. You can just see the love they have together. I also got a couple glimpses of her handiwork. She is an artist. There were some things that weren't for each other, but she did it. Very cool.
Her little avacado seed crvings are darling to just awesome. The macrame was very nice with natural things you'd find along the seashore.
Which reminds me, Mexico being Mexico as it is, I think they are in a very cool place. I'm jealous of Zadia, I'm jealous of her having love like that.
So anyways, Zadia looks like she has the world for her to play in. Nice job if you can do it, I think she has.
