Not only was he born during the Eisenhower Administration, but he stands only 5-8 _ a good four inches shorter than most of today's PGA Tour players _ and ranks among the shortest hitters in the game.
It's no surprise, then, that so many middle-aged, middle-income golf fans feel a connection to him.
"When I walk through the galleries," Funk said, "I always hear: 'Hey, way to go for the old guys; Way to go for the little guys; Way to go for the short hitters; Way to go for the cross-dressers.' "
He smiled, then added, "You wear a skirt once, you're a cross-dresser, I guess."
I saw that game where he wore a skirt. It was great. And I hate golf.
