In what may be some of the most honest words to leave a politician's mouth recently, Mitt Romney, at the Republican presidential debate in Las Vegas, said to Rick Perry (who accused him of hiring "illegals"),
"...we hired a lawn company to mow our lawn, and they had illegal immigrants that were working there. And when that was pointed out to us we let them go. And we went to them and said--"
Then Perry interrupted him and Romney got testy and then said...
"So we went to the company," Romney continued, "and we said: Look, you can't have any illegals working on our property. I'm running for office, for Pete's sake, I can't have illegals."
Romney: I'm Running For Office, For Pete's Sake, I Can't Have Illegals. (http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=L5Xa8k_xL8k#)
Don't you just love how these conservatives use the term "illegals." It kind of reminds me of the way they use the term "homasekshuls." They just have a way with words.
Somewhere on the Internet is the 5, or is it 7, things needed for a "scandal" to stick. Nate Silver had it up on his old fivethirtyeight.com website. I think you can search his old posts at the NYT website, which hosts him now.
Back in '08 this one didn't past the test. From what I see from that clip, I watched it live as well, it won't make for a great ad. If anything Romney won over the crowd as the debate went on.
I give Perry, who ran Gores '88? TX Campaign, a 50% of still being in this thing come the next debate. His cash flow is reported to have collapsed.
Illegal works for me, wether Canadian, Chinese, French or Mexican.
Yes hopefully Romney gets the nod and the evangelicals don't vote and the hispanics vote against him.
Hate hurts the hater not the hated

Yeah, I watched a lot, but not all, of the debate. I'm not a total masochist. ::)
What struck me about Romney was his facial expressions. He has a lousy poker face and when he was upset or offended, it was very obvious. When you're sitting across from certain world leaders and they can read your face, well, that's a bad thing. Because we all know good diplomacy begins with great bull->-bleeped-<-.
Romney also demanded he not be interrupted but when he was doing the interrupting he had no problem and often tried to talk over the other candidates. (Also not a good diplomatic move.) The whole thing reminded me of some schoolyard banter, "Yeah? Well your momma wears combat boots!" That's why I couldn't watch the whole thing.
But, like it or not, Cain seemed the most genuine, crazy, but genuine. He really has no idea what he's talking about half the time but he says it with real conviction. I guess we have to remember Cain was a motivational speaker for something like 15 years before hopping on the Republican presidential bandwagon. It shows.
As far as Perry, he's a gunslinger and shoots anyone or anything he doesn't like, another diplomatic no-no. But he really did handle Romney well and got Mitt's feathers ruffled more than once.
All in all there was a lot of great entertainment and comedy that came out of that debate. And that's what I'll miss when it's over.
Prediction: They will be on the Republican ticket in 2012
