Title: I'm FTM, Say What?!
Post by: stldrmgrl on November 04, 2011, 08:40:39 PM
So today I found myself in the hospital due to chest pain I've been having which was believed to have possibly been related to an increase in my E and Spiro.  They conducted two EKG's, an X-Ray, CT Scan and blood work, all in the end showing negative results for any issues, which means, after I discuss the results with my endo, I should be allowed to resume HRT.  Now to the story.

The nurse was questioning whether I was on any medications and I told her I was prescribed Estradiol and Spironolactone for Hormone Replacement Therapy, diagnosed with GID.  My name on the paperwork and wristband clearly read my male name, which cannot be mistaken for a female name as it is definitely not unisex.  Having practically told half the hospital that I am transgendered, I figured it was obvious I am, on the outside, male transitioning to female.  Um, guess not.

Later on after I had been at the hospital for some time, the nurse entered my room and asked whether I still had any girly bits or whether they had all been removed.  Not thinking of her exact words used, I replied "no", which in her mind I was answering the question of whether the girly bits had been removed.  After hearing my response, she said, "Oh okay, so do you still have periods?  When was your last menstrual cycle?"  After pausing for a few seconds looking very confused, I replied with, "I wish I could answer that, but um, I'm actually transitioning into a girl...so, never?"  She had a very embarrassed look on her face and apologized.  Just thought I would share as I found it a bit humorous :)

Who would have thought that that chest pain actually became a compliment? It's because you're passing too well, I'm happy for you! :)

In my transition I like to use this proverb: "if you can not convince them, confuse them", but I think you did both things, first convince her, and then confuse her  :D

In the beggining of my transition I got that a number of times.

Kinda funny and about as complete of a misgendering as humanly possible.

I actually had that with one of my doctors not too long ago..
It's a psychiatrist, the one that subscribed me my ritalin, anyway... I made a reference to my chest surgery and he slipped back and forth and apologized often because he kept being confused because I look so masculine that he kept reading me as "biologically male" and thus thought I was MTF not FTM.

I found it a little bit flattering in a way.

Once having come out to a roommate as 'trans' he asked me: 'But how do you have facial hair?' I had just assumed he'd know I was MTF. Evidently not.

It was flattering, but I was/am still very confused by it lol.  Thanks for the comments/replies.

This has happened to me too- I will tell people I am trans, and sometimes they think I am FTM (particularly if they see a picture). I tend to be flattered that they think it's plausible I was once a woman :)

:eusa_wall:

OMG, seriously?! lol

Thanks but, to unravel some of my confusion if you could, tell me what it is that gives such a suggestion as I see very little female in my photo.

Let's see. Your face, it could go either way in your pic but I mostly see woman and you have petite shoulders so I assumed you were transitioning to male. Lol.

A lot of people just immediately think I'm a girl, and more-so at a distance... and it stays that way, unless I say something -- anything. :embarrassed:

If they take a closer look, though, they'll go "OOOH!!" I guess the bottom line is that - at the moment - I look like a FTM trans-person, except at a relatively early point in their transition. You're not alone! >.<

I've been mistaken for FtM. I guess transitioning or androgyne people are in enough of a grey area that much of society isn't great at interpreting our appearance.

I thought you were done transitioning >.<, your face looks masculine still, but you have a round jaw-line and like JenJen says, you have very petite shoulders. Also, didn't you have your thing marked as male? I thought you did lolz

So much so that Sevan has given up with some folks and just throws hir arms up and says sarcastically 'fine I'm FTM' and just drops it because some folks just don't get it.

Well, thank you for the kind words!  However, I assure you I am transitioning to female.

Ah, how I do wish I was finished transitioning...but I have just begun.  I'm hoping HRT will help my face just a bit more as I'd really prefer to avoid FFS if not needed.  BUT, we will see in time.  As far as my gender marker on here, I've always had it as female.  Nonetheless, thank you for your kind words as well.

That's okay with me!  Given that I'm only three months into my transition, I love to know some people can't quite tell which gender I am; that offers me great hope for the future.

To everyone else, thank you for your replies; I did read them.
