Title: video game reccommendations
Post by: xander on November 19, 2011, 09:31:29 AM
So I'm playing catch up on my console, basically buying games that are now cheap that I haven't played. I'd like some suggestions.
I'm looking broad spectrum - any game is fine.

Something light-hearted would be good for the mix. I tend not to wander too far from horror :P
But really, I've only bought two games so far which I didn't enjoy.

Halo 3 (my first of all of them) and
Dead Rising (the original)

Um, have you thought about purchasing the Orange Box (Half Life 2, Portal, Team Fortress 2), Left 4 Dead 2, or Dragon Age [this is more RPG than horror, though like "Elder Scrolls", it does have some creepy elements]?

I would also recommend "Amnesia", but as far as I know, that isn't available for consoles.

You should check out the $20 bin in wal-mart and pay attention to the platinum hits. Plenty of good and cheap games to try out. Off the top of my head, Bioshock? Great spooky game with a good story and fun gameplay.

Amnesia has been deemed as one of the most frightening video games on the market right now...especially when playing it alone.
If you like a good scare, you should probably check it out.

The portal games are pretty fun if you haven't played them but they are more about the puzzles.

Amnesia is a messed up game, you are pretty much trapped in a giant mansion being hunted by monsters with no way of defending yourself.

I think it goes without saying that Skyrim is amazing.

Holy ->-bleeped-<-, Amnesia WHAT THE FUUUCK (http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=H4w0_n1Yras#)

Portal games do have some creepy aspects to them though, which is why I wouldn't exclude it from the list.
It isn't horror, but it does coincide with Half Life's back story as well since Black Mesa and Aperture Science are stated to have been competitors.

Amnesia seems like it would be really frightening to play alone - not only is your character incapable of wielding a weapon, but you begin to go insane from your surroundings because, to some degree, there is fear in how defenseless you are. The darkness, for instance, is sometimes the only "safe" way you can navigate a room, but being in the dark too long will gradually cause you to lose your mind. When this happens, it actually makes it more likely that you end up in a dangerous situation though and being killed. Your perspective also gets majorly distorted as well as if your character is having an anxiety attack and can no longer rationalize as to what is real and what is not any longer.
