Simple answer = anonymity
online people can post all kinds of small minded rubbish without fear of any true reprisals

Although some of the responses to these trolls are side splitting

I don't think anonymously stringing together a bunch of hateful words to upset people is in any way related to confidence.  No, they would not say those things to anyone IRL unless they were quoting themselves to brag to their friends about their supposed trolling skillz.

Because typically there are no ramifications for what they say.  I mean, sure someone can write a response back, but that's nothing to fear.  Though I suppose those who are computer savvy might suggest otherwise to my first sentence...

on the bright side  - overall, the comments in those threads seem to be more positive than negative.

i totaly understand this, i gian the same confidance, though i can admit ive never been that rude.  the answer is ofcourse that you dont have to face the person personaly ofcourse ^^its just so much easyer to say what you really mean, or be a bitch to something you dont understand. thats what this is, they dont understand it so the easiest way to deal with it is to rage at it. im quite scared of this happening, but im gonna deal with that when it comes ^^ for now, i just dealing with now.

There's no confidence there, just trolling. That John Wether guy makes me want to... never mind.

I've had experience with trolls for many years as a web administrator and from my dealings with them, the majority are essentially losers and cowards IRL with no backbone, so the only way they validate themselves is by wielding the power to provoke and cause pain for others online.  While a great many trolls are kids trying to impress their friends, there are also adults who feel empowered by the percieved grandeur of being responsible for causing a stir.  The internet sometimes brings out the sociopath in people - it's incredibly saddening that these folks have so little empathy for others.

Online or behind your back is no difference, they shy away from "Difference".Perhaps that is why most CD's don't go out in public. If i wore a tartan kilt,a tassel in front, and a set of b->-bleeped-<-ipes, not a batted eyelid. However,if that kilt was Shoolgirl style I'd be 'OUT'ed.As the old addage goes...societies to blame.
As for me the SMALL TOWN SYNDROME comes into play. I can go on a plane to another city and wear what i like without that Eyes On ME feeling
