Title: A Significant Tattoo
Post by: Mario on March 08, 2007, 09:41:00 PM
I just want to share this. The night befor my mother died I wathched the movie Dragonfly. A month before that I had taken my mom shopping and she had picked out dragonfly note cards. After her death, orange dragonflies were always around me. Even landing on me. This went of for awhile. I had said that I wanted to get a dragonfly tattoo on my left upper arm. She has been dead for 4 years now. So 2 weeks ago I woke up and I had a strong feeling it was time to get the tattoo. So I went to a place here in town and brought the picture of what I wanted. So when he is booking me and taking my deposit, he is searching for a date for me. This is a good thing when a tattoo artist is backed up and busy 8) so he says how about March 19th? I'm like that is perfect. I said wow. He asked what? I told him that is my mothers birthday and the tattoo signifies her death. Also, I am getting it in the third month, at 3:30. But that is another story of 333, all of my like. Guess I can make that another post. Never forget how short life really is.

i think that the problem with most tattoos is people who get them while young usually [aren't] thinking about the [long term].  keep in mind your value system and goals may be [vastly] different only 5 years in the future however that tattoo will be exactly the same. one future problem is there are a number of people who are turned off by and or make [negative personal assessments] based on tattoos.

my opinion: tattoos can be symbolic, but you [don't] need a drawing on your body to be reminded of it all the time.  if you have to get a tattoo, get a temporary one. if you still want a permanent tattoo, make sure it is [not] normally visible.

True, I wouldn't normally recommend getting one before around the age of 30.  Most people undergo something life changing around that time, so if you wait, the chances of regretting it are much smaller.  If somebody doesn't like tattoos, then tough beans for them if they want me.  It's not normally visible, but I'm anything but ashamed of it.  I waited for years knowing it was permanent, and I'm glad I did.  I did it for myself and not for anybody else.  As far as getting more, I'll just wait and see what happens.  As of now, I have no desire to get any additional ones.

Damn! That's awesome Marco. That's definitely a sign she's all around you. I can't even fathom the thought of losing my mother right now. But I plan on getting somewhat of a family tree type tattoo on my back. My mom had coasters made of a symbolic picture of what my lastname means. It's a crazy looking tree with a knight and some other stuff. So I'm thinking of getting that, with my mom, dad, and grandparents initials or first initial.

And yeah. TOO many young people get "spur of the moment" meaningless tat's. I have a lot of friends with just DUMB tat's. When you ask um why they got it "Oh, I dunno I was bored". On the other hand, I find tattoo's beautiful. I have a good friend, a girl, who has a full back piece, and it's amazing artwork, very original.

You can tell a lot about a persons personality by what they have stamped on their body.

Whatevs about NOT getting tats because OTHER people might not like 'em!  I'm 23 right now and its been one of my lifelong goals to have 3/4 length sleeves on both arms by the time I'm 30...than again I do plan on running my own business for the rest of my life so maybe its different because of occupation/etc!

That's cool Marco. Nice to have a meaningful tattoo and a memorial all in one.
And I vote yes on the pictures after you get it done too.

Very nice Marco, would very much like to see a pic when it is done.

I recently went out with someone who had quite a few tats and she explained what each one meant to her.  She had designed and drew them all and many had some really deep symbolism going on.

I agree with being sure about them. I am 41, almost 42. There is a very good reason for getting it, and a reason that will always remain. My mother has been gone for 4 years now, but the significance of the dragonfly will live on. To me, that serves a purpose.

I thought you were [much] younger and that's the reason for my comment on age.  but you're already [up there], so you [do] know what you're doing.
