I cooked an Indian-esque feast on a whim.
Home made saag paneer and chana dhal, strips of aubergine and pepper cooked in fresh herbs and cracked spicy seeds, steamed rice with saffron, and heated up some peshwari naan and onion bhaji... and half a pint of beer.
Can't eat dhal and believe me, if you lived with me you wouldn't want me to haha

"There are races of people who are all slim, who are stronger and faster than us. They all have straight teeth and perfect eyesight. Arthritis, diabetes, hypertension, heart disease, stroke, depression, schizophrenia and cancer are absolute rarities for them. These people are the last 84 tribes of hunter-gatherers in the world. They share a secret that is over 2 million years old. Their secret is their diet- a diet that has changed little from that of the first humans 2 million years ago, and their predecessors up to 7 million years ago. Theirs is the diet that man evolved on, the diet that is coded for in our genes. It has some major differences to the diet of "civilization". You are in for a few big surprises."
- From the Introduction to the Paleolithic Diet
I have been working with a nutritionist for several months to get my triglycerides down, to get my ldl-to-hdl ratio back into the normal ballpark, to lower my A1C, to lose weight (especially the spare tire and the love handles), and to cut down on the handfuls of medications I take every day.
To that end, I have been in the process of fundamentally changing the way I eat ... rather than just diet. Top on the list has been reducing and eliminating processed foods. Getting rid of the "whites" (white flour products, white rice, potatoes, etc) hasn't been easy. I have been replacing them with "colors" (brightly colored vegetables and fruits high in phytonutrients), seeds, plant skins, and whole grains.
Focus also is on "swimmers" (fish, shellfish, etc) and "two-leggeds" (fowl), and de-emphasizing the "four-leggeds" (beef, pork, lamb, etc).
Also, I have been trying to eliminate both natural and artificial sweeteners. If sugars are like heroin to the diabetic and pre-diabetic, then the artificial sweeteners are like methadone. They both keep you addicted to "sweet" - and susceptible to a diet rich in starchy foods high on the glycemic index.
The processed food industry is killing us. The pharmaceutical companies help cover the symptoms of the disease.
So the last thing I ate or drank was a cup of Chai tea, no sweetener, splash of lowfat milk.

I was a poor, ramen-eating student some years ago. I understand your situation.
When you boil the water for the ramen noodles, throw in some chopped carrot, onion, radish, and celery or bok choy. A hard boiled egg will add a good source of protein (or cook the egg white with the noodles). If your ramen comes with a flavoring packet, only use half of it to avoid an excessive amount of sodium. Tastes pretty much the same.
This makes a surprisingly cheap and filling meal.

A friend of mine would mix his ramen with beans and spaghetti sauce. I'm not discounting the added protein and iron and all that, but it was pretty revolting. He'd make a week's worth and eat nothing but it.
I like your idea better. Like fried rice, but ramen.
Mm, now I really want some ramen.
I was going to have a ginger ale for breakfast, but I made a promise to take better care of myself. Sooo I'm going up to make myself some eggs. Add in some vegetables if we have any in this godforsaken place. Oh, and a smoothie! Yes yes.
Waaaah, I spilled my smoothie and there was no yogurt to make more. ;( I made some eggs with a bit of onion and half a fried potato, and orange juice has replaced ze smoothie.

When I make it at home, I add miso paste or cumin if there's no paste. If I'm adding veggies to my soup, I'd honestly rather just get some scallions and tofu and make regular miso soup. You have to put something really acidic on it to keep it from turning. Lime juice works fairly well, but it has to coat the outside or be mixed in well. If you don't mash it up, you can always wash the lime juice off. The turning is totally normal though.
I used to eat half and then put the other half in a plastic sandwich bag with a lot of lime juice.

I had avocado in my green salad tonight. Among the ancient peoples of present-day Mexico, the avocado was considered an aphrodisiac, no doubt because of its shape. Actually, the avocado is very nutritious and are a key ingredient in "California cuisine." And avocado oils are used in cosmetics, as some poster here might know.

It is the jobs of your kidneys to get rid of any excess fluid intake. Really excessive fluid intake can deplete your electrolytes and can be life-threatening. As it is, most people are slightly dehydrated and could use the extra fluid.

I am greatly enjoying a bottle of Baron Herzog, Old Vine Zinfandel, Lodi, 2010
Yeah, it's been one of those days. But at least I did not dirty a glass.
Grilled two small ribeye steaks on the charcoal grill along with two ears of sweet white corn.
Good way to do ears of corn on the grill: Cut both ends off and split the husk lengthwise.
gently remove the husk in one piece and strip out the corn silks. Butter, salt and pepper the ear and replace it in the husk wrap it in aluminum foil along with a few drops of water. Put it on the grill away from the hot coals about five minutes before the steaks go on. Comes out perfect every time, never scorched.
Season the steaks with Montreal steak and grill medium brown both sides until the mooing has stopped......delicious!

I've only drunk orange juice.
"Old vine" zinfandel is a wonderful wine to go with grilled or barbecues meats.
Grape vines can live for more that 100 years. After the first couple of decades of growth, the yields begin ti decrease, but the grapes take on a more intense flavor. The oldest producing California vineyards date to the 1860s. The Lodi area has vineyards with vines up to 140 years old (1880's). The wine was derived from vines planted approximately 1935-1940.

Never had whale so far, but it's something I'd like to try. Ate lots of bear, roasts and stew meat, my fave was bear meat link sausages for breakfast. Bear is like pork and has to be well cooked. Did the sausages in a frying pan half full of water for until it had mostly boiled out, dumped the rest and browned the sausages. Bear meat is good, almost sweet if they've been foraging in berry patches or apple orchards, but if they've been on a salmon diet it isn't very good, still edible, but oily and doesn't have good flavor. Just as deer meet is rather awful if they have been living on sage.
i only had bear stew. it was good, but the meat didn't taste strong enough for the dish. that's how it gets when you're used to mutton and reindeer, i think my mom expected a little too much. whale also has a strong enough flavor for stew, but i like it better in thin slices cooked in a japanese kind of sauce.

I suppose taste is dependent on how any meat is seasoned Taka. I thought Caribou was rather flavorless too. My friend went to Alaska and dropped two of them from 60 yards out with a .44 magnum pistol using plinking loads he normally used on the range. My freezer was always full of wild game given by friends who were avid hunters.

that's true, it all depends on the seasoning. and that bear didn't have a strong enough flavor for the stew that was made, it was seasoned as if there was mutton or reindeer in it, and those have a much stronger flavor than a bear that only ate berries. especially mutton tastes a real lot of mutton, no matter how it's seasoned. the bear meat did have a nice flavor, but it lost to the stew it was in.

I had to look up half of what all that was. I have never heard of someone having salt and butter in coffee.
My breakfast tomorrow is a pot of nettle tea, a banana and some poems.

Hi ,

So what was the last thing I ate / drank ?

Technically not "eaten" but pretty close since I put so much in it and it's effectively my breakfast--coffee with a half tablespoon of grass-fed cow butter, a couple tablespoons of MCT oil, two drops of D3, a tiny dash of salt, and a bit of stevia for sweetener.

This brings to mind something I recently read about in the NewYorker, a new powdered food product that just came out on the market named after "Soylent Green" the movie that Charlton Heston stared in several years ago. It looks promising for people on the go and might be ideal for people wanting to maintain a certain weight level.

I have a friend who's really excited about it but I'm a fan of real food, contrary to what my coffee breakfast implies. I just usually am not that hungry for a big breakfast in the morning.
i like real food too, but still only drink coffee in the morning. with lots of milk. maybe i should try to mix in cocoa powder again, see what it tastes like with stevia sweetener.
