Title: Ma. state on trans law
Post by: evelyn #5 on December 02, 2011, 04:56:53 PM
I know that not too long ago that Massachusetts was going to pass laws protecting transgender people in employment, crimes, and etc... Including allowing transgender people use their targeted gender bathroom. However the bill did not pass because everyone was afraid of perverts raping children in the little girls room. Then the whole bill became known as the bathroom bill which meant that everyone had an issue about the bathroom part. Now my question is why not just make another bill that addresses all those important issues of discrimination in work, crimes, LEAVE OUT THE BATHROOM, etc... which to me seems much more important then peeing in a stall. Don't get me wrong i find the bathroom part to be important, but if someone fired me for being MTF or FTM i would be more pissed. Perhaps maybe the bathroom part of the bill should be left in another bill by itself to be discussed later on.

Do any of you think think this would be a good ideal or was there a good reason to put all those rights together knowing that it lowered the chance of getting all the important things that transgender people need now? This just confuses me because if that was the only reason why they did not pass the bill then alot of transgender people are losing out.

Gov. Patrick signed the bill. I got this from the Mass Transgender Political Caucus website:

"This bill will give transgender people equal protections when seeking employment, housing, credit, and education. The bill also expands the state's hate crimes protections to now include transgender people; a community that experiences alarmingly disproportionate levels of harassment and violence.

The final version of the Transgender Equal Rights Bill passed by the legislature unfortunately does not include protections within public accommodations. MTPC and our coalition partners fought hard to try to get public accommodations restored in the Senate version of the bill, and were unsuccessful in doing so. Although this bill does not include public accommodations, this is a historic and important victory in the fight for achieving transgender equality in Massachusetts."

I understand that the bathroom issues for transgender people of society is an important part of being human, however if you dress like a women, look like a women, pass as a women, than what is the problem? Just go in do what you need to do and get out! I don't personally see this as that big of an issue. I pass as a women as mtf so I go in do what I need to do and get out and nobody says anything to make an issue. Why is there such a riot about this issue?

IIRC, when I was up there last, it was according to what your legal id listed you as. I could be wrong, but that is what I was told by a number of people at the time.
