How many people in the U.S. are lesbian, gay, bisexual and transgender?
Precise numbers do not exist. But a growing number of population-based surveys include questions designed to offer better measurements of sexual identification and gender identity.

Gates, co-author of "The Gay and Lesbian Atlas," released a detailed report on LGBT numbers in an April 2011 study from the Williams Institute. Among his findings:
• There are nearly 700,000 transgender individuals in the U.S., or 0.3% of the adult population.
• Of those who identify as transgender, a majority have taken some steps to transition from one gender to another.

MONTREAL — Draped in a pale blue surgical gown, her shoulder-length ginger hair feathered delicately across a pillow, Drew Cordes turned on her side in a hospital bed and watched a Bugs Bunny cartoon on her Mac laptop.
In less than one hour, Cordes, 29, of Albany, will undergo gender reassignment surgery, or GRS, commonly known as a sex change.

MONTREAL — Drew Cordes was awake and heavily medicated when she was wheeled in a surgical bed to her private room on the first floor, four hours after riding an elevator to the second-floor operating room.
Her gender reassignment surgery was complete and represented crossing the finish line after a long, painful and costly marathon, a conclusion to the journey.

ALBANY — Doctors don't learn how to treat transgender patients in medical school and the medical establishment has been slow to address a rising trend, according to a local physician.
When Dr. Matthew Leinung, an endocrinologist and professor of medicine, joined the Albany Medical Center staff in 1991, he took over a practice from Dr. David Goodman, who had been seeing a half-dozen transgender patients beginning in the 1970s.
"He (Goodman) was the only one who would treat them at the time in this area and he asked me if I was OK taking those patients," Leinung recalled. "I said I didn't have any problem with it, but I didn't know anything about treating them."

Thank you for the Times Union's series on transgender issues. As the executive director of the Pride Center of the Capital Region, the local lesbian, gay, bisexual, transgender community center, I have been so impressed with the Times Union's coverage of the all-too-invisible and misunderstood transgender population. Informative and respectful depictions of transgender people are all too sparse in our media, and we applaud the Times Union and Paul Grondahl for devoting the time and print space to this topic.
It is no small feat in our culture to challenge gender norms. It takes bravery to be who you are when people do not understand what it means to be transgender. Your series has helped bring more clarity in a very public way.
Transgender series wins a top reporting award from Sigma Delta Chi

A Times Union series that examined the lives, struggles and triumphs of transgender people in the Capital Region won a top reporting award from Sigma Delta Chi, a nationwide organization for journalism.
Staff writer Paul Grondahl and photographer Cindy Schultz's project, "Transgender: A special report," took the feature reporting prize for newspapers with a daily circulation between 50,001 and 100,000.
"We're all very proud of Paul and Cindy. Those of us who work with them are not at all surprised that they have won one of journalism's top awards," said Rex Smith, Times Union vice president and editor.
