Ob-Gyns: Prepare to Treat Transgender Patients
Washington, DC -- To address the significant health care disparities of transgender individuals and to improve their access to care, ob-gyns should prepare to provide routine treatment and screening or refer them to other physicians, according to The American College of Obstetricians and Gynecologists (The College). In a Committee Opinion published today, The College also states its opposition to gender identity discrimination and supports both public and private health insurance coverage for gender identity disorder treatment.

The American College of Obstetrics and Gynecology has come out with a new statement for their members: it's time to prepare to work with transgender patients.
I have criticized ACOG in the past for their policies regarding home birth and midwifery care, but this statement is really good news and an important step for transgender health care
This is a great step at improving access to care. On Tuesday I will be having my first appointment with my new doctor and she is an OB/GYN. They have a great deal of experience with the prescribing of hormones at least the female ones and it fits in with their scope of practice quite nicely I think.

My hormones are administered by a gynaecologist already.. I only had 2 choices as to who would do it, her or a male endo.. I figured a post-op trans woman who also specialises in HRT for menopausal women would have a very good knowledge of what she was doing.
My health insurance is great except for one thing: it doesn't cover anything relating to GID. Perhaps someday ACOG (or my government) can persuade my carrier to include that in my coverage. :)

Very good, this has been needed.
Some Transpeople have been very discriminated by Health care and Gynechology, and in some cases, such as with the Transman Robert Eads, this discrimination has even resulted in death, when he was refused Care by two dozen different doctors only because of his status as a Transman and did not get the treatment he needed until the disease had already turned incurable.

With Google's announcement to include both SRS and FFS as coverage benefits, it could set the stage for many others to follow. Plus the passing of ENDA certainly wouldn't hurt things either...time will tell.
