His sister's shoes were like magic.
He would slip them on in secret and walk to Mr. Brown's candy store to buy Kit Kats or lollipops. He feared getting caught, but even at 8 years old, he couldn't deny how good those little blue clogs made him feel.
"It's hard to describe," Steve Stanton says. "There was just this sense of 'rightness' to it."
Four decades later, Stanton's attempt to recapture that sense of well-being has turned him into an international news story, a reluctant spokesman and, for now, an out-of-work public administrator.
