I don't know if it's just a Finnish thing but we got this board game called "Afrikan tähti" which would be Africa's Star in English. It's always been my favorite. :D
I sometimes like to play checkers, too.

I love backgammom as well, don't think I have lost in years, then again I haven't played it in years. I only play for fun and don't like the gambling version of it. I run away when someone brings out the money to put down on the game.

My favorite board game is Clue, trying to figure out who did it, with what method, and in what room. My second favorite game is Monopoly.

Gather around my rocking chair, I'm going to talk about the good ol' days. When I was young, we didn't have video games. These board games painted the tapestry of our lives. First it was Candy Land and Chutes & Ladders. Then checkers and chess. Along came risk, monopoly, and clue to teach strategy, planning, and problem solving. Then you go off to college, and play Passout! Hugs, Devlyn

It's called 'Life!' and was created in a drunken day by a friend of mine many years ago. I've played it twice and it always makes a night in with friends.

In the course of the game you have a roleplay (esque) character who has to get from one end of life to the other. Along the way they step on various squares and receive cards - these cards refer to events in the character's life and are split into young/middle age/old age.

The young ones are the most energetic, players find themselves doing egg and spoon races down the road, star jumps, playing hide and seek - or any number of things. Middle age tends to involve the most drinking, and the most drinking style games, whilst Old age contains the most roleplay and acting - the outcomes of these activities affect the stats.

The game lasts hours, and is very intense in it's variety/action/drinking. By the old age section, the players really do feel infirm and for most, death is a blessed relief. This wearying from youthful enthusiasm is one of the real joys of the game.

When everyone has reached death, they tell their life story using notes they have written during the game, they then count up all the stats and each player declares themselves the winner.

Rather like life then.

I remember playing chutes and ladders as a kid.  I think there is an electronic version on Hoyle.

My favorite board game is chess.  I had a USCF rating of over 2000 when I was in high school, but gave up playing in tournaments after I was in college.  I still "practice" against Chessmaster on the desktop, but I doubt I could play at B class anymore.

Anyone go to Quiz Nights? They are really popular here usually in the local pub. Very competitive too.

Interesting.  Can you explain how it works?  I've never heard of such a pub activity.

Usually teams of six to eight friends, they pay around $5-10 and there can be four to five teams. There is a quiz master who organises and asks the questions. Points are awarded for correct answers and deductions for wrong ones. At the end of the evening the winning team gets a prize, bought from them the entry fee.

I have never been in one but my brother in law loves them.

Avalon Hill made several war games, like D-Day, Gettysburg, Star Ship Troopers, Jutland and Afrika Korps.  Usually it is two players and you take one side or the other in a historical conflict.

Takes strategy and advance planning.  A lot like Risk, but more challenging.
