Anti-Gay Cartoonist Selling Homophobic Calendar on Amazon, Barnes & Noble

As the new year approaches, self-proclaimed "Christian cartoonist" Joe King has illustrated a calendar of twelve cartoons called, "I'm Not Gay, I'm Just A Sissy." The cartoons employ outdated, highly-offensive stereotypes about LGBT people, and more specifically, gay men. Both Amazon and Barnes & Noble have the calendar available for sale in their online stores, generating a response from LGBT advocates. According to Daily Kos, a representative from Amazon said that further customer feedback against the calendar would be necessary for it to be removed from the store. King has defended the calendar on his Facebook page and went on to make inaccurate and anti-gay comments about HIV/AIDS.

This calendar is incredibly problematic and damaging to the LGBT community. The "humor" it purports to offer relies on a belief that there is something inherently funny about being gay or gender non-conforming. Furthermore, it espouses inaccuracies about LGBT people that only contribute to the stereotypes used to stifle progress toward equality.

C'mon so what? If you want jokes to never be at anyone's expense, then there'll be zero humor left in the world.

I am looking forward to watching that new show, "Work it"... It's about time something that horrible comes along.

After GLAAD – together with bloggers, community members and allies  - spoke out, Steve Rothaus with Gay South Florida reports that a highly offensive and anti-LGBT calendar by cartoonist Joe King titled "I'm Not Gay, I'm Just a Sissy: 12 Months of Sexual Confusion," is no longer available on Amazon.com.

Amazon.com has not commented, but the calendar no longer appears to be available after thousands including Pam's House Blend and Towleroad called on Amazon.com to stand up for their LGBT customers by pulling the calendar.

On Wednesday, Barnes & Noble removed the product from their website. A spokesperson for the company confirmed to GLAAD that it was never sold in stores.

Barnes & Noble announced that it has pulled a calendar called "I'm Not Gay, I'm Just a Sissy: 12 Months of Sexual Confusion," from its website, pushing another major retailer to make the same decision.

The Gay and Lesbian Alliance Against Defamation is asking Amazon.com to pull the calendar from its virtual shelves as well. GLAAD, along with bloggers at Towleroad and Pam's House Blend, are asking people to sign a petition directed at Amazon.com, asking the major online retailer to pull the calendar from its available items.

Amazon.com is no longer selling a controversial calendar by antigay cartoonist Joe King after several bloggers and LGBT organizations lobbied the online retailer to pull the item.

[..]

Daily Kos reports that after the calendar became subject to a petition for removal, King took to his Facebook page to sound off.

"Hoo-we! Hell hath no fury like a he/she scorned... The telephone tree of tantrums is lit up like a Las Vegas marquee for "Boy-Lesque" today with hate mail, threats of boycott and even the risk of Jesus spitting on me for my "Sissy" calendar. I SAID I WAS A SISSY UP FRONT. Ironic who the real bullies are isn't it? Let's see if I get a call from Oprah's people or even Anderson Cooper..."
