Title: Drinks
Post by: espo on January 05, 2012, 08:22:15 PM
If you were to meet a friend after work and had to order a drink, what would it be ?
I'm not that big on beer so I think I would order a Caesar which is Clamato juice (clam and tomato juice) vodka, drop of worchestershire and tobassco sauce and celery salt rim'd glass.  It sounds boring but it tastes Alright.

I'm bigender too so I guess I have two drinks as well?

Girl mode is definitely a whiskey sour (is that even a girly drink at all, lol), or hard cider

Boy mode is beer, preferably belgian or white ale

OooH
I haven't had Guinness for years. I'm pretty damn sure I couldn't drink a pint of it anymore

I'd have a lemon, lime and soda, or a glass of white wine.

I like a really hoppy IPA or a Chilean or Spanish red wine of some sort. Or of course a local pinot noir.

(this nerdiness brought to you by the corrupting influences of local microbreweries and winemaker friends)

Before I moved to Oregon, if I drank at all it was whiskey or vodka. I thought beer was gross and I was intimidated by wine.

Microbrew. Failing that, Irish coffee.

What is microbrew?

Here are the ones I have access to:
http://oregonbeer.org/portland-metro/ (http://oregonbeer.org/portland-metro/)

You don't have to click on that, though. It's just small-scale artisan beer, usually a lot higher quality and a bit more expensive than stuff that's more mass-produced, and usually only available in areas local to whatever the microbrewery is.

Oh yeah, a growler of Snow Melt Winter Ale from my local brewery--good for frost removal most anywhere!

Bit of a toss up between a Jim Beam and coke, or a local Pinot Gris white wine.

Blue Moon is good, or 1551, Guinness, Sapporo, Dead Guy, or whatever sounds interesting that I haven't tried yet.  Or Corona Light (I don't care if everyone says they're crap).  Or rum & coke.

I prefer a good cider.  But if I'm feeling particularly Kentuckian, I'll have a bourbon and 7-up/ginger ale.

Beer, any of my three locals, Lagunitas, Russian River or Bear Republic Brewing - but the Pliney the Elder by RR in particular.

Wine, it's almost embarrassing what level of wine I can buy here and how cheap it is compared to other places.  I can get Napa/Sonoma wines at less than 50% of what they are paying for them on the East Coast - that is, the ones they even sell on the East Coast.  But on the average you can go to the winery and get stuff for 15-30% off, another 15% off if you buy it by the case (and you can mix cases).

Had a Black Russian (Khalua and Vodka) last night and it was really good. Problem is, 2 sips and its gone and it's so expensive.

I'm fond of Northern real ale and some belgian beers - though I drink most things people put in front of me, except pernod, I got so drunk on that once and the smell now makes me dry heave.

My friends are very keen on the sambucca or jaegar, we sometimes have jaegar and sega evenings where we crack open the bottle and the old genesis (though here called a mega-drive) and play fifa Italia '90.

Oh, jaeger.  I haven't had that in a while.

We just got a Trader Joe's, so we can finally buy cheap wine that tastes good...actually, that might be a bad thing...

Depending on mood and other things a scotch and sars (Sarsaparilla) but most places it is a "sorry we don't have Sars" with a strange look my next option is white wine & Juice (orange if I'm out and about Multi Vitamin at home)
If not wanting alcohol I normaly go for a strawbery milkshake/smoothy etc.

I used to do all my writing in bars, and I didn't like to drink so I always demanded they make me a pot of coffee.

Regarding actual drinking, a friend of mine came over tonight with a sixpack of Golden Valley Brewery Tannen Bomb. It's a seasonal from some people who don't get around much. It tastes really roasty and smokey and malty, and it's 8%, which I guess if you're used to Lagunitas isn't out of the ordinary, but it's pretty high for me. After two we got way into left field about various local bands and which members are sleeping with whom, and how tasty a person would have to be to change our own or their sexuality for a night. Lol.

I like pure rum,
bar tenders are confused when I ask for a glass of bacardi
but being gluten intolerant I can't have beer,
so if I am forced I have wine
so I guess my restrictions don't allow me to choose much

Urrrr, what about the flipside of drinking. I have the opening strains of a headache which promises to be a real crash walloper. Last night I carried a nearly full pint of Guinness home from the pub in the glass, via a chippie, sat on my sofa and happily finished it off.

Reminds me of an old (bad) joke. Two Irishmen were in Rome and went to the pub, what shall we have? What does the Pope drink? they asked. He likes Pernod, was the reply. Well two pints of Pernod. After 6 rounds they staggered out and passed out. next day, one says to the other, the Pope drinks Pernod, no wonder they carry him around in a chair.

Eberhard Anheuser, Adolph Kuhrs and Arthur Guinness attend a brewer's convention.
Meeting, the three decide they will dine together.
Scanning the menus, seated in a private corner of a well recommended culinary establishment,
the host asks, "Before ordering your meals, will there be anything to drink?"
Mr. Anheuser answers, "Why of course, I will have a Budweiser."
Mr. Kuhrs said, "I will have a Coors"
Considering his dinner partners' drink orders,
Mr. Guinness looks up from his menu and says, "I will have a glass of water."
Simultaneously, Kurhs and Anheuser sputter, "WATER?"
Glancing again from his menu, "If not either of you are having beer, then neither am I."

Aint that the truth.

From the wall of a London pub I once visited:

He is not drunk
who from the floor
can rise again
and drink some more.

But he is drunk
who prostrate lies
and cannot drink
and cannot rise.

Like most bar staff in pubs, my drink while behind the bar is tea, which I had in my hand before I put it down to type this. The customers have beer or wine, mainly the men have the beer and the women have the wine.  I am convinced that the general reason for this sexual difference is simply the response to the Law of Conservation of Mass we all learned in lesson 1 of science at school. What goes in must come out or stay there, and for drink, if it doesnt stay there, it means visits to the loo about which women are generally more shy than men and so they have the drink with smaller bulk.

mainly the men have the beer and the women have the wine

I don't know, most of the guys I know drink beer and whiskey every now and again, while the girls I know drink wine at home, but out on the town it's Long Island Iced Tea.

But it is funny.  I overheard this at a Willie Nelson concert.  Any Willie Nelson concert.  Every Willie Nelson concert.  By just about 9 out of every 10 guys who get to the bar:
I'll have a Bud and shot of Jack, and a Bud-Lite for the little lady.

Like clockwork.  It's just the drink for that bunch.

Hippie jam bands drink expensive microbrew, boys and girls.  Urban contemporary, well African-American men don't drink near as much as their honky brothers from another mother, and not close to their Latino buddies either.  But when they do they seem to like brandy and real expensive champagne.  But the girls love brandy.  Expensive brandy.  It's the folk-rock and 'women's music' where all the women order wine (white, of course).

Expect for the parrot-heads, they are (of course) wasting away in Margaritaville.  And they've got more ways to power blenders than you can shake a stick at.

As I live on a small island in the Caribbean with two rum distilleries, when I dink I drink rum. Rum and tonic, Bloody Marys with rum, a drink we call tea made with key lime juice, rum, crushed ice and sweetened wit squabs nectar. But I mostly smoke mass quantities of home grown organic high grade Ganga.
Rum here is about $6 American per liter. I used to brew homebrew beer but it is to warm here for proper fermentation without AC or refrigeration and current is very expensive at nearly 50 cents per KWH.
I do drink a lot of expresso

I live right in the heart of wine country.  I can go out for a walk and quickly be amongst the vineyards, looking at scenes that look like they came out of a postcard.

I drink... water.  ;D  Or if I want to get fancy, a chocolate milkshake.  Or if it's lunch, Snapple peach iced tea.

Or if I don't mind getting a headache later...  mocha or latte.  (hmm, maybe I should look into decaf..)
