Title: Awkward/Funny check out moment
Post by: Paul on January 08, 2012, 12:25:39 AM
So my sister and I were going to our friends' house tonight and she asked me to grab her Smirnoff for it (she's of age, but I was running into the store).  Now my license still has my birth name and my picture is me with wicked long hair (I'm waiting to update the picture until my name is official in a few weeks).  So I'm checking out and of course I have to show ID because I'm buying alcohol so it was awkward because my ID looks nothing like me and it says I'm female, but I SO wish I had a camera to capture the double take/look I got from the lady when she was trying to compare my ID to me LOL!

Are you on testosterone?
Because this would've made things soooo much more awkward...
>_< well, at least if you were experiencing changes as quickly as I am.

I had a similar thing happen using my debit card to pay for a breakfast out with my kids. I had to show my ID, and I'm 6 months on estrogen/progesterone. The double-take was both gratifying and amusing, and the cashier handled the whole thing professionally.

haha sounds awkward

my id is post transition, pre T when I had black hair, but I "accidentally" spilled white out on the dumb little F on my ID OOPSY

I can't even imagine the awkward moments you would encounter. ID's in Australia don't have gender markers on them.

thats cool

I mean, as a cashier, I never look at anything but the last name, not the picture, gender, just the last name when I am checking that someone has the same ID as credit card

Portland occasionally has OLCC workers running around trying to catch underage sales, so a lot of places here actually look somewhat closely. I rely on the fact that I'm almost never the first transperson the cashier has come across.

That is really funny though.

Nice.

I don't mean to hijack your thread but I had a similar thing happen. I'm 18 which is the drinking age in Alberta, where I was visiting. But I look about 16.
So I go into the liquor store and the cashier who is with a customer watches me the whole time. She and the customer exchange this look like I'm about to be busted. So the customer stays at the counter with her until I come up to pay.... she asks for my ID in a condescending way as if she knows I won't be able to provide it... so I hand it to her and she looks surprised. She studies it for like 30 seconds, then slowly hands it back and I pay. Then the customer who's still standing there asks to see the signature on my debit card (WTF?) so I show her because I wanted to prove them idiots wrong. It didn't match the signature on my ID, but whatever. When I handed her my ID she had an understanding and apologetic look, like she discovered why I looked so young. She handed me the bag and I left.

I hate sh*t like that. Can't wait to get my name and gender marker changed (which I can do next week ;D ).

I bought another pair of shoes today, OK I'd run out of shoes OK :embarrassed: But the woman in front of me got the third degree, driving licence, check the signature, wanted the postcode for a $20 pair of shoes.

So here was I with my cute sandals, just had my eyebrows styled, really cute, goddess people are going to notice tomorrow, way too arched, and tinted almost black. Another story.

I put my sandals on the counter. She says, they are so cute I've been meaning to buy a pair. I told her I thought they looked really nice with shorts or leggings and she agreed. Credit and sign I say passing over my card. No need to box them I'll wear them out. No problems, have a nice rest of the day. They have a girl at the exit to check bags which was within meters of where the cashier was. A really cute blonde girl was doing the checking. We all love those sandals, and they look good on you.

I think I'm starting to be on a roll.

See what made you happy today as well

I'm not, but I already pass 50-75% of the time so the fact that she thought I was a dude and then saw the birthname and the non-matching picture completely threw her lol.

This is mainly why I asked.

(https://www.susans.org/proxy.php?request=http%3A%2F%2Fi187.photobucket.com%2Falbums%2Fx164%2FDancepantsEniwa%2Fth_Video74.jpg&hash=8f1b9cdc3f59e118b013c9ec1b675b9dab5a8110) (http://s187.photobucket.com/albums/x164/DancepantsEniwa/?action=view&current=Video74.mp4)

If I'm babbling too much, don't watch the whole thing. I mainly state the reason why I asked within the first minute, but then elaborate it further with addition anecdotes, details, etc.... sooo....

Yeah, the times I don't pass it's usually because of my voice.  I'm going to be starting T within the next couple of months so with my name already being changed hopefully things will smooth out.  Good luck man.

I'm in the name change process now, so it won't be long hopefully. :]
But thanks.

@Gifted: the customer asked to see your card's signature? WTF indeed. Was this person a cop?

Awesome!  My name change should be finalized by the end of the month-ish.  The lawyer I went through (that handles all of the legal stuff) got the rest of the paperwork at the beginning of December and he said it could take up to 2 months.

Yeah. I guess she couldn't believe that I could possibly be 18 and wanted to do a good deed by catching me.  ???

this basically happens to me everytime i go to a new gas station to get cigarettes or someone new gets hired where i usually go. its so akward but its really awesome when they still call me male pronouns and stuff even after they see my horrible license picture with long hair. im just waiting for my bday to get it changed because i dont have the money right now and i have to renew it then anyways.

As much as I hate the stupid "F" on my ID,
I will definitely miss freaking people out like that xD

And I agree that being on T would have made it even more awkward,
Hearing the deep voice would have freaked the poor clerk out even more xD

I've definitely had experience with this lately,
I was about to get a new job (I quit, cus it sucked)
And they'd been calling me a guy until they saw my ID and the assistant manager just kind of stared like, "Huh?"

When traveling to Canada, the 2 women who were (not flight attendants I don't think, but the ones at the front desk that allows you onto the plane after getting your boarding pass, whatever they're called) stared at my passport photo, looking up at me then back at the ID then up at me again, then both started whispering to each other in debate over whether or not that was my ID and whether I was a male or female. They almost didn't let me on the plane. I haven't started T yet and I don't look much different than I did in my passport photo other than the long hair, but I think the name/gender marker confused the crap out of them. What made it more awkward was the fact that my mom was right there with me and my mom is completely against the whole trans thing, so it's not like explaining being trans was even an option in that scenario. Also to keep it awkward, their arguments over my gender were right in front of us and we could hear them clearly and just pretended to be oblivious to it.

I've almost been refused at the bank before because of my voice, especially over the phone. I practically have to give them ever damn bit of legal information just to get my balance.

LOL I love that you're such a good sport. Some people would be mortified, but it's good that you weren't. The best time ever, though, is when you're at a bar, and you show a picture of you at 18 with long hair and F clearly on the ID-as well as a VERY feminine name- and the bartender still refers to you as "he" and "this guy" all night, not being one the wiser.

I actually went to my bank ahead of time and told them very straightup that I was about to transition and what it would look like, and I asked if they thought that would cause any complications. I was ready to change banks if necessary. The lady I spoke to smiled real big, congratulated me on what "must be an exciting time" for me, and said no big deal, I'm not their only trans customer. She said if anybody gives me the slightest bit of trouble to just ask for the manager. Yay.

I was in Thailand for a hair transplant and on the way home going through passport control I didn't think they were going to let me fly home. It was nothing to do with the hair transplant, my passport photo was taken almost ten years previously and I didn't resemble myself closely enough to convince them it was me. I wasn't presenting as female or anything close to, I think it's just the subtle effect of hormones; no facial hair and some head hair that made all the difference, if nothing else it does seem to make you look younger. It took three passport control officers to make the decision. I found the whole experience very funny and quite satisfying. I recently shaved my head again and I'm almost as gnarly looking as I was in my passport picture. Warning! Don't go to Thailand if you value your waistline, the food is Awsome  ;)

I had that happen to me at the eye doctor last time I went.  The lady called my name and I walked up and she looked confused and said my name again like a question and I was like "yup" and she was like "oh" with a frown on her face.  A few years ago I probably would have been embarrassed by that, but I had an amused little smile on my face as I followed her.

Today at work the tech who came to help us in person read me as male but the person on the phone read me as female based upon the paperwork having my legal name listed.

The tech kept using male pronouns and then the person on the phone had to be put on speaker, referred to me w/female pronouns and announced my legal name. The tech was like  ???

Glad as I was rightly read as male initially - damn birth name, cannot wait to change it!!!

The one plus I have going for me is that they can change everything to my chosen name except payroll stuff even though it's not official yet.  The plus is, the head of HR knows me and my situation and still refers to me as the right name and pronouns despite what their records still show.  Hopefully it's only going to be a few more weeks.
