Pontiff's strongest tirade yet says same-sex nuptials 'undermine the family'

Pope Benedict XVI denounced gay marriage in his annual "State of the World" address Monday, going so far as to say the same-sex nuptials threaten the future of humanity.
In the speech, the pope, 84, unleashed what some consider being his strongest tirade against gay marriage, saying it is among conventions that "undermine the family" and "threaten human dignity and the future of humanity itself," Reuters reported.
"Pride of place goes to the family, based on the marriage of a man and woman," the pontiff said.

This, coming from the guy who was in charge of all reported pedophile priest cases within the Catholic Church. And what did he do? He moved the pedophiles around, so they could prey on more innocent children. For that he got elected Pope. Practicing Catholics should have been asking for his head, and the head of everyone who voted him in.
Maybe the problem the pope has with gay marriage is it doesn't produce any offspring - no little boys to molest.
"Pride of place goes to the family, based on the marriage of a man and woman," the pontiff said.
Pride goes before the fall too.
Here's what bothers me about that is that it assumes that if this is an option then everyone is going to choose it. Yup, the main reason I'm not gay is because I can't get gay married. Hell, that's the most appealing part of being gay to me. Twice now California has allowed gay marriage for a period of time. At first there was a huge pent-up rush, then it went down (particulary when you toss the out-of-state marriages from the counting). The second time there was a much smaller rush, then it went down to the same levels as we had seen before.
No one was 'turning' gay to get married, seems that most of them were gay first, married later. And if that's true - and it is - then marriage makes no difference in the number of gays.
I am a harbinger of the apocalypse! ;D
(I'm not actually married, but w/e)
Maybe someone should remind the Pope of all the pedophiles he's hidden everywhere going back to when he was a cardinal. While he's at it if he's so concerned about the family why doesn't he work with famiies whose marriages are struggling. This is what annoys me whenever a candidate or some anti-lgbt people throws this in or faces. I wish that I could speak in front of these people because my life is the antithesis of what they claim.
The Pope is a politician. Politicians only need to know how to get elected. Popes don't need to worry about re-elections so after elected can say whatever they want. To some the RCC is teflon, nothing can be said or done that can't be forgotten or excused away.
The next star on the rise is that Doyle guy in NY. He's one of the best politicians I have ever seen come out of the RCC. And he's 100% anti-LGBT. Wait til he gets the puff of smoke. He'll weave those Catholics around his little pinky so fast they won't even know it.

Julie, It's Achibishop Dolan that you reference. He's just been promoted to cardinal. I will do some research on him.

"Same sex marriage threatens the future of humanity"
Pffft!! Give me a break!
You know what is a threat to the future of humanity?
Humans.
It makes no difference if they are single, married or divorced.
You're right about that, Laura.
I read an article few days ago (www.equally-blessed.org/node/21 (http://www.equally-blessed.org/node/21)). A poll of American Catholics showed that 90% of Catholics back transgender rights. Apparently the article has been removed. I made a copy of the article. Goes to show you that the hierarchy is out of touch with its constituents.

Popes are a greater threat to humanity than gay marriage - look at history.

Yeah, that's the guy. He's so full of it, I think he actually believes what he's saying.
Okay, he's not that gullible.

UM, only a few bulls do that au natural these days. I live in beef country and 98% of the cow pregnancies are artificially inseminated. This is how they cross breed the different breeds to get a desired grade of beef and milk production. The bulls that result form some of the unions grow shorter hind legs and cannot reach the cow properly. I pass a place called the Rocky Mountain Sire Services Inc. a few times a month and it is always filled with cows ready to be artificially knocked-up. They will also do this at the ranch site. The Journalists know better here.

I looked up the Vatican website to find out what the impediments to marriage are in the RCC. Infertility is apparently okay, but impotence is not as the marriage cannot be consummated. So that sort of contradicts his position.
I could also say that as someone with some Jewish heritage, having someone as Pope who was in the Nazi Party and Hitler Youth is offensive to me , but being a lady I will refrain, even though his apology to the Jewish people was half-hearted.
Karen.
I have my qualms with some catholic doctrines, non the less, I do like the ritual and have many catholic friends and will probably one day officially become catholic myself; however, I really can't stand the current pope. When he was cardinal he was in charge of the Congregation for the Doctrine of the Faith (you might know it better by its former name, "the Holy Office of the Inquisition "). For some reason I always liked John Paull II, I felt he was pretty compassionate. Maybe the next pope will be better.
Oh yes - he who supported Hitler. Quite a track record of caring about the future of humanity. Or maybe just certain kinds of humanity, excluding Jews, homosexuals and transfolk.
Kia Ora,
"Pride of place goes to the family, based on the marriage of a man and woman," the pontiff said.
::) Says the man who has never been in a sexual relationship, never had children has no idea of the dynamics of family life...
::) BTW He drives around in a bullet proof 'Popemobile' with body guards...So much for having 'faith' in the Almighty...If god's right hand man don't trust his 'boss' *Hence the bulletproof glass and body guards * what hope is there for the humble lay follower [ ::) It does make one wonder ::) ::) ]
Metta Zenda :)
This is ironic since I always wanted to marry the pope.
Nice One Jason!
As the Bible doesn't actually define a man or a woman it's all a bit problematical really isn't it. Maybe someone should ask him for a definition that has absolutely no exceptions. That should keep him busy for a while.
Karen.
I've heard the same thing from the Mormons for years :-\ Is it because the world is already overpopulated and most folks aren't properly cared for?
Is the LGBT community responsible for all the wars, disease and famine throughout the world?
I'm sure it has nothing to do with any hypocritical, bigoted greed mongers :P
Just out of interest were does the idea of a pope come from?
If I remember the bible story it was Jesus telling Peter that he was the rock on which the RCC would be built open, so Peter was the first pope, but after that it sort of gets totally political. So where does the present pope fit into a religious dynasty. It has been broken as far as I can tell, by politics, sexuality, wars, money/greed and self interest. I also read somewhere that if we have a black pope, which I presume is to do with pigmentation rather than good and bad, the world ends anyhow. Sound familiar sort of white supremacist stuff.
Then we have the head of the church of england, now that was politics by Henry VIII, purely and solely, yes?
Lutherans, not too sure was that someone rebelling against the RCC to gain a foot hold in Europe? I don't know enough about it.
The Plymouth brethren were a group who went from the UK to the now USA, not too sure why, but they started up their stuff in the USA, then Mormons came along. As far as I can tell there was some sort of 'miracle' and a new religion started. Not too sure about Jesus and Peter now, were they part of the miracle?
If Jesus was god or something like it and gave its word that (we may have not understood) that Peter was the pope and popes were a cool thing to have as religious leaders.
So what has gone wrong?
Gods seem to be pretty dependent upon human nature. Humans seem to express opinions to suit their own beliefs.
I've never been too happy with 'how does god make mistakes' explanations. Why should a baby die a horrible death. Why should 50%ish of the world live in famine.
Why did god let a completely knew little person be born so deformed that they will live a life of horror.
I won't go on.
But if the churches have got all of those explanations wrong. Why do they think they have LGBTG rights commentary correct?
Cindy
Personally, I think the lid blew off and the various religious leaders got worked up when it was found out that Santa Claus had been allowing gay marriage among his elves and reindeer for years
Sorry, I'm terrible
I thought 'black popes' were from the time of two popes, one in Rome and one in Avignon or some sort of anti-Pope (and how do you get that job? I'd be a great anti-Pope.)
Mormons come from the Second Great Awakening (Second because there had already been a first one starting about 1720, then the second one in the 1800-1840, which along with the Mormons also inflicted us with the Seventh-day Adventists, the Church of Christ, and the Disciples of Christ (and many other one-off circuit riding preachers. But, silver lining in the dark cloud and all, the second one also was the beginnings of Abolition movement, which led directly to Women's Rights.

Yech! What a job.
On the the other hand, you probably make a lot of bovine friends.

You may well be right but isn't this a good example of how religious comments are interpreted. I'd bet you $20 that if a person with dark skin became Pope the whole story would come out again.
As for the cow breeding, it has gone way way way beyond artificial insemination. I know of places that are running 24/7 machines to sort sperm into high yield, good gene bad gene male female good milk high weight, and then use the selected sperm to inseminate. BIG money.

As the Bible doesn't actually define a man or a woman it's all a bit problematical really isn't it.
The Bible absolutely defines what man and woman are. In fact, the Bible gives such specific details that you can actually test the genders scientifically. All you need to do is examine a small biological sample of the person. If the biological sample is composed of dust, it is a man. If the sample is composed of male ribs, it is a woman.
Remember man that thou art dust, and unto dust thou shall return.
The rather grim Catholic invocation on Ash Wednesday, one of the rare occasions where they veer dangerously close to telling the truth.
We are stardust, we are golden, and we've got to get ourselves back to the garden
Joni Mitchell, Woodstock, getting it more right.
Every atom in your body came from a star that exploded. And, the atoms in your left hand probably came from a different star than your right hand. It really is the most poetic thing I know about physics: You are all stardust. You couldn't be here if stars hadn't exploded, because the elements - the carbon, nitrogen, oxygen, iron, all the things that matter for evolution and for life - weren't created at the beginning of time. They were created in the nuclear furnaces of stars, and the only way for them to get into your body is if those stars were kind enough to explode. So, forget Jesus. The stars died so that you could be here today.
The scientific reality as explained by Lawrence Krauss, in his classic physics lecture: "A Universe From Nothing."
Remember you are stardust, and when you die stardust again you become, you are the universe, and the universe is you. 'Twas ever thus, and forever it will be. So don't worry, be happy, now pass the dutchie on the left hand side.
Dr. Kat's invocation for Hash Wednesday at The First Church of the Presumptuous Assumption of the Blinding Light
The church has always condemned gay rights just to differ from roman and greek culture, they almost killed all western ancient culture trough the middle ages. It doesn't surprise me they never change this way of dealing with this aspect. It is immoral, i wonder what side Christ would take, the one of a rich cardinal stating peoples are not equal, or the one of a little gay guy confronting all the discrimination that our society brings.
I try to read between the lines, just few are against gend or sexual diversity, society has yet changed.
Overpopulation threatens humanity's future.
Correct me if I'm wrong but isn't his religion against contraceptives? Yeah....because gay marriage sooooo increases the population size at a dramatic rate -_- *sarcasm*
The only thing marriage gay or straight will threaten is my wallet.
