Title: Phantom penis?
Post by: Kentrie on January 15, 2012, 09:48:19 AM
Should I have a phantom penis because I don't and I want one.

Well dude,
your clitoris IS a penis actually ... just that cis-AFAB folks do NOT at all like it to be called any such thing!
The other bit to know, it being the size of a non-erect average penis, it's 'buried' some at the bottom of the vulva's vestibule - and when 'freed' by e.g. Metoidioplasty quite a 'show off' after some time on T.

Not sure if that makes you feel better? I think: no need for phantoms, if you ask me :-)

I've just read some older posts on here about how other guys can feel it when they're sexually excited or are half asleep and I feel like an outsider because I don't have that feeling. Are all FTMs supposed to have this feeling?

I have experienced it usually when I'm dreaming or half asleep, as you mentioned others have said. I'm sure there are those who don't experience it though and I don't see how it would make you any less trans than anyone else here, no need to feel like an outsider!

I'm pretty sure a study done a few years ago stated that around 60 percent did; so the majority do. However, not all reported to feeling it. They used the study to :"argue that the study adds to the evidence that body images of gender are hard-wired before birth, and may also hint at a biological basis – one that is predetermined before birth – for why many transsexuals claim to feel a mismatch between their 'gender identity' and the sex that they were born.

While still preliminary, the theory is based on existing knowledge that much of the way we perceive our body is from innate hard-wiring of our brains during embryo development."

It goes hand in hand with the study done after that stating that white brain matter in FTM is almost identical to biological men.

I mean, I suppose I have one? I forget that what I have down there isn't exactly what it's supposed to be until I reach down there LOL.. but even then I forget about it. I don't really think of it as female at all anymore, until I actually THINK about it.

If I ever did get one I probably wouldn't know what it was. When I have a packer on it feels as if it's kinda real but I don't know if that's the same thing. I also had a dream one time when I first started going through puberty that I had a penis and in my dream it got bigger and started to have a slight pain and when I woke up the slight pain was in my pubic area for a few seconds. but I've never felt what other guys said they've felt. The penis in my dream was also bleeding.

I've had a phantom vagina a few times. It's not "there" most of the time, but during hot-n-heavy sex my mind experiences it.

So maybe practice more? Learn visualization techniques? This might sound flippant, but maybe get a dildo and/or "packer" and let your body become used to the new weight and balance? It could help with the visualization/phantom feeling you want...

I feel this "phantom" you speak of, usually when I'm sexually aroused or really tired. during these times I often forget that I don't have one yet. although...I sometimes help the feeling along by using a dildo to jack off...I also wear packers fairly often (not lately though).

Like others have said, I get a phantom vagina when I'm "in the mood".

hmm, donno,
I had tried it a couple of times in sexual dream where I got a penis I could use, and where I could feel it.
I might have tried it once IRL, but exept the growing from T its not that common.

however I do feel like I know what it feel like for guys, I dont know if its because of my knowlegde of how female and male parts are connected,
or because of those dreams where I got a penis?

I remember a few times where I felt like I had a phantom penis, a while before I found out I was trans. It was a bit strange, but I got the feeling that I knew exactly how a guy should feel. Since then, and after I found out I was trans, I didn't really get this feeling anymore. My phantom penis just... went away.  :-\

It's different for a lot of guys and every guy is different.  I have a phantom one I feel when I'm aroused or just laying around but I don't have it when I dream.  Reguardless it's not as useful to me since I can't grab it.

All FTMs are not the same.  How different guys feel is entirely dependent on that person's own brain chemistry.  Don't waste time comparing yourself to other guys, it will make your transition a lot harder in the long run.

Not all. The neuroscientist VS Ramachandran conducted a study and found that about 60% do.

Somewhat relatedly, I have had this feeling regularly for as long as I can remember. One of my earliest memories is experiencing it at age 3 and thinking "wtf?".

I get it in dreams sometimes. I don't think you can really get it just because you want it, it's just a feeling that happens sometimes. Maybe it is part of the subconscious though.

I get it sometimes. Usually when I'm aroused or half-awake.

For me, the phantom penis thing was very prevalent before I came out as trans*. I could 'feel' it most strongly whenever I was aroused, but even when not in the mood I was conscious of something there. The strange this is now, over 1 year in transition, my phantom penis is almost totally... gone. Sometimes I have to will it into existence when I'm aroused but otherwise it has mostly faded away or become an off-and-on thing instead of a constant.
