Title: Is this normal?
Post by: Wilhelm on January 16, 2012, 12:09:13 AM
Okey, so basically I'm waiting for an appointment with this team that specialize in transgender stuff and they will make me do all these tests and what not to see if I'm trans or not. And if I am (diagnosed) then I'll get hormone blockers (FINALLY) and then later on testosterone and surgery and etc... But the problem is, I've been waiting forever and I haven't heard sheit from anybody. They (psychologists) sent some sort of referral letter a while ago (early 2011) to this team and they said we'd get a letter with the date for our appointment later. But I haven't got any sort of response or anything from them, yet. But what I'm wondering is, is this normal? Does it usually take this long or should I contact the doctors to see if they've forgotten me or something?

I just feel like I've been sitting here doing nothing, for a year, just waiting and waiting... :-\

You should follow up and contact them. From my experience, the whole medical system seems to not always be very organized and has the most trouble working together with other outside doctors and whatnot. Worst thing that would happen if you contacted them anyways is that you'd just be told to keep waiting and then you'd know everything was progressing, and if they start giving you the run around then go back to the first doctors and try to get that fixed or even get new doctors.

If it's been more than 6 months then it wouldn't hurt to call and ask for an update, just to make sure. I've had referrals "lost" more times than I can count.

I'm sort of curious about what kind of "tests" they plan on making you do, too..

There's no test to see if you're trans. Give your psychologist a call and get the contact info for this "team" and give them a call. It's different everywhere you go (in terms of what's normal).

Thanks for the replies. And about the tests, I just read that it's to "evaluate your mental health". And it's pretty much just memory tests and other things like that. I don't understand what that has to do with being trans but it seems to be necessary if you want to be diagnosed with GID so I'll just roll with it.

Good luck, keep bugging them, and be patient.

Yeah I had to take a "test" like that. It's to rule out concurrent mental health diagnoses. Check the box that applies, true, very true, false, etc. Takes less than 5 min.

guess it depends where your from and who your contacting.
I seen places where you could get homones the first day, and where you had to wait for 2 years.
