I was at the local farmers market on the weekend and saw people growing their herbs etc in the foam boxes that drinks and stuff come in. You often see them thrown out in the pharmacist garbage etc. OK nothing new about that but that, people have been doing that for ages. But these ones they had painted, and then put pretty designs on them. Made them look really cute. Just thought I'd share.

I used them a few years ago. They insulate the plants from the summer sun and have drain holes in the bottom. Worked well. Thanks for the reminder, I'll try them again now I have enough space for some garden.
Karen.
Not the same as the foam, but 2L Soda bottles work great. I used them last year to set a bunch of broccoli and peppers in a hot house structure for the winter. Everything came up nicely and was growing great. And then we had a huge storm and it knocked them all down even though I thought they were sheltered from the wind, but evidential they were not. And of course it happened on a Friday morning when we had left for the entire weekend this night before.
But the idea is cool, those bottles aren't going anywhere for years so why no use them for something worthwhile. The painting is just a cool touch. I know Shannon would have dragonflies all over them.
I wish we had done it this year again, but we just didn't have time with everything.

I grow my fresh herbs in a half wine barrel which I put on rollers.
I'm thinking about what I am going to put in my spring garden later this month.
I am in Climate Zone 9, so I very rarely get a had freeze. I have citrus and avocado trees in my yard. My lemon sets three times each year.
I have started on my garden. So far Parsley, Strawberries and Basil in pots. I will start the beds this week when I have some timber for edging and wire to keep the wallabies from the seedlings. Buggers have had a go at the Silver Beet the previous tenants left in the front garden. It was going well too.
Karen.
Sorry Karen
Once the wallies know forget it. I've got a possum with a tomato fetish. Lost the lot.
A 4' chicken wire fence should do the job if I put in enough star pickets. Became something of an expert omn fencing with our last dog. >:(
Karen.
Until you find one inside the fence full of the goodies and too full to hop out .
It will be fully enclosed. ;D

WE don't have the problem with "wallies" in California.
We do, however, have possums. But I have a dog - a coon hound mix - who loves chasing away possums
