Title: Attending Affirming Church
Post by: gennee on January 30, 2012, 12:38:25 PM
I attend an accepting church. My wife and I have become members as of yesterday. There were at least 3 gay couples and 5 or 6 lesbian couples. As far as I know I'm the only transgender person there. My wife and I feel comfortable and have made some friends.

I may speak with the pastor about my being transgender. I can honestly say that I feel comfortable about doing this. I'm also sensitive to my wife's feelings. She accepting of my dressing up to a point. Recently, for the first time, she walked beside me on the street while I was dressed. As you can small advances have made. I would make my day when I attend service dressed up.

Our church is accepting of everyone. While we are not a "gay church", we love everybody. There are I think 3-4 gay couples and 3-4 trans people. I'm actually now an ordained elder on the church session and in charge of buildings and grounds as well as being on the finance committee. Mostly the church is comprised of cis/het people but we all get along fine.

I've been out at my church since last Easter. Though two of the pastors are lesbian, it's not a gay church per se. It has a large gay membership, and I'm not the only trans person.

An affirming church is a great thing. Congratulations, Gennee!

thank you for your kind words. It's not a gay church but one where I feel very comfortable.

Yes I wasn't interested in going to a "Gay church" or living in a "gay section of town" etc. I'm just a normal person now and would rather not compartmentalize my life. I have some friends who are gay but only because I think they are cool people. They just happen to be gay as well.
