Title: Looking for Endocrinologist
Post by: Corey on February 10, 2012, 09:15:05 PM
Well, I have a letter of recommendation here but no endocrinologist to turn to. Does anyone know of an endocrinologist willing to work with transsexuals somewhere in Central Pennsylvania?

I haven't found any yet, and I've been searching for a while. I've heard the Mizzoni Centre (Philadelphia) is pretty good, but last I checked they have quite a long wait list.

Does it have to be an Endo who prescribes you estrogen?
I know sometimes even your GP will do it.
Unless the letter is specifically for an Endo, I wouldn't be so fixated on the idea of that type of doctor prescribing you estrogen, especially if there are none in the area.

Has to be an endo, as only they can measure levels and guarantee safe hrt.

Any doctor can order those same tests.  An informed on trans HRT GP may be a better choice than an uninformed on trans HRT endo.

But by all means get an endo if you can.

My GP is currently monitoring my levels and is looking for a suitable endo, but her first choice seems to be reluctant to work with transpeople.

You know, this stuff really isn't rocket science.

I know we like to think that doctors are gods and have deep extensive knowledge of our health beyond our capabilities.

But really, all they do is order blood tests, which every lab puts reference values on, and see if anything is outside the normal range, which is automatically flagged on the results.

Ever wonder how doctors can take a look at your blood test results for like 4 seconds a page and know it's fine? It's because it has a little symbol or something similar depending on the lab next to any test that was out of the reference range.

After that, provided the rest of your health is good, they just check if levels are in the natal range for your identified gender.

A GP can do this just fine.

This is untrue, because I don't see someone who is specifically an endo and I've noticed that I've already had my levels routinely checked a lot more than guys on here. My doctor is not only trans-informed, but is involved in trans rights & activism; every time I see her I am confident she knows what she is doing and couldn't imagine being happier if I saw anyone else. I pretty much third what everyone else has said and can also speak from personal experience.

My apologies, I've been given bad information then. Thanks for letting me know.

Hehe, my therapy is actually for estrogen. I'm MTF. And yeah, the Mazzoni Center is the only place I could find. Not sure if there's any gender therapists in the area either.

Sorry, edited my post.

I don't know if I misread the title next to your name or what, or the fact that your current picture can sort of pass for a pre-T FTM...which may not necessarily be a bad thing for you since it means testosterone wasn't so harsh on your features.
Anyway, again, I apologize for that.
