Title: letters and hysterectomies?
Post by: Byren on March 08, 2012, 10:33:59 PM
Hey all,

Just hoping to clear up a little confusion on my part. I realize that, in the US, 'T' and top surgery require a therapist's letter, but does a total Hysterectomy/Oophorectomy require the same? Or does it require a physician's letter instead? Both? Or would I need to chat with a surgeon directly?

Personally I would like to have those two particular procedures before starting hormones, but I am unclear on how to go about it. Though I don't personally have any medical conditions that could require the procedures, I do have some family history that could come into play (my mother and aunt had severe endometriosis, and a great-aunt ovarian cancer). And yes, I have done my homework...I know all the pros/cons/risks etc associated with both procedures. I just have my reasons for wanting to do those first.

Thanks in advance for any information. I've been able to dig up tons of data on the procedures themselves, but absolutely nothing on the legal/medical requirements for getting one for transition purposes.  ??? Maybe I'm blind....forgive me!

All the best,

Byren

No letter required. Insurance will require medical reason  for payment though.

This depends entirely on your insurance and the state in which you live.

Have you had some input from a shrink and endocrinologist?

Thanks everybody! I'm about to switch to a new PCP so I will ask her about my options.
