A group of Wellington activists who call themselves The Queer Avengers have held a news conference to voice their concerns at the way transgender and gender-variant people are represented by the media.

The conference was presented by three transgender women – Shelley, Brooklynne and Ashley – with the aim to dismantle destructive norms they say are portrayed in the media.

In a statement, the Queer Avengers said the news conference "presents an opportunity for the media to learn about the personal burdens and the joys of being trans in addition to wider legal and medical obstacles that impede trans people's abilities to simply be recognised in the appropriate gender".

The group cited research from Trans Media Watch which claims 78 percent of those in the transgender community felt media portrayals were "either inaccurate or highly inaccurate".
