Title: annoying instances in transition
Post by: go..ogle on March 17, 2012, 11:41:59 PM
Earlier this evening I went to grab some snacks from a nearby store. The lady ahead of me pointed to me and said, oh he can go first.. I moved up and placed my food on the counter. The man said, "you're not a he. You're a girl, right?!" I gave him a WTH kind of look and said, "no." He said, "you're a he? Or are you a she?" I told him I'm a man & he still kept w/the "he or she" business. Annoyed I said I'm a dude louder than necessary. He apologized for several moments before giving my change back. I never encounter this..so I think it's because he has heard me speak pre-t, if anything? I'm a little confused. I'm read as male at work, school, everywhere. It was very strange.

As I said in my intro, I try to be as stealth as possible as to avoid unwanted attention at school& everywhere else.

So..I'm interested in hearing how you folks handle people like this clerk. I felt I handled it really well but hate that I let it bother me.

I've never really been in a situation like that. To be honest, the guy sounds really rude and that was totally unnecessary. What the hell does your gender have to do with him doing his job and getting paid to do it?

You seemed to handle it well though, I have no idea what I would've done. Probably just said I'm a girl but I'm not on T or anything yet so I don't really pass at all.

Yeah what made it so weird was the fact that he found my gender relevant to purchasing a soda and some other snacks. ::)

"You seemed to handle it well though, I have no idea what I would've done. Probably just said I'm a girl but I'm not on T or anything yet so I don't really pass at all."

Thanks& that's rough, I know - I've been there.

You handled that situation really well. I pretty much handle those types of situations the same way.

I mean considering I pass unquestionably I usually just look/talk to the person like they're stupid like "I'm clearly a guy, what's wrong with you?"
Some might think that I shouldn't be so harsh because they don't know better, but I'm the type of person to give back what you give me. Therefore, if you approach me rudely with nonsense like "Aren't you a girl?" I feel like I have every right to be rude right back to you.

I think you just gotta keep your cool and give them the bio male reaction, which would be something like "I'm a man! What the hell's your problem dude?!?!" and just be confident, don't look the slightest bit nervous.  8)
