Local officials back effort to expand Michigan's civil rights act to include gay, transgendered residents

LANSING – More than 65 elected officials from across the state have signed on to a call to expand the state's Elliott-Larsen Civil Rights Act to include protections for gay and transgender people.

The Local Electeds Against Discrimination (LEAD) statement calls on state lawmakers to enact protections similar to what many local communities have adopted.

In March, state Sen. Rebekah Warren, D-Ann Arbor, said she would introduce legislation to amend the Elliott-Larsen Civil Rights Act to include protections for gay and transgender people.

LANSING — Legislation set to be introduced Thursday would prohibit employers, landlords and others in Michigan from discriminating based on sexual orientation or gender identity.

Sen. Rebekah Warren, D-Ann Arbor, announced her second shot at amending the state's civil rights law to add protections for lesbian, gay, bisexual and transgender residents.
