Title: One year on T (before and after)
Post by: lexical on April 08, 2012, 08:19:24 PM
As of last week, I'm 1 year on T. I found this pic today from my first day on T and was curious to see what a comparison would look like from then to today. Here it is:

A lot of things have changed in my life over the last year, mostly for the better. It took awhile, but I've finally gotten my name legally changed, ID with new name/gender marker, and last month I had my name and gender changed with Social Security. I'm mostly living stealth these days, not that I hide my past but it doesn't seem to come up anymore.

Well anyhow, just thought I'd share with you guys. Anyone else? Doesn't have to be changes on T (given that a lot of us change significantly from earlier parts of our life to when we start ID'ing as trans and/or male), just curious to see and hear what's changed for you in this area of your life   :)

Holy beard, batman!

Things since starting T have been weird for me. Most people who have seen my before and after don't notice much of a difference. lol

It's great that you've been able to do all that stuffs.

You look amazing, man.  Love the beard. ;D

Not much new.  It's been nearly 2 1/2 years on T for me.  All of my documents have been changed since 2010.  It feels good to just live my life, especially after having top surgery last June.

My current goals are centered around employment and moving.  But I still have my goal of a hysto and possible bottom surgery (meta) in the future.  Job and apartment first, trans-related stuff second.

Wow man, congrats on the top surgery ;D I'm looking forward to that day so much. It's still 1-2 years away (want to finish school first) but I think about it all the time. Good luck with your job and apartment search.

You look fantastic. :)

I'm not on T so I don't have anything to add in that department.  I just wanted to say congrats and that you look great.

Awesome progress - can't wait 'til I have a beard of my own.

My voice is significantly deeper than it was pre-t; read as male in person& on the phone; it's lovely. :)

As far as facial hair, clearly nothing like that of lexical, lol.

I shaved for the first time a week or so ago. It's slowly growing back.

Sweet, you look great man.

I'm about 4 months in. My voice has dropped a lot and my fat is redistributing nicely. My skin has gotten coarser and and I'm quite a bit more muscular. I have some faint sideburn growth and some patchy hair on my chin. I'm starting to get hair on my chest, which I thought would gross me out but it makes me happy.

My kid switched from calling me mommy to calling me daddy. I got my name legally changed and got my license name and gender marker updated. I finally got my name changed with medicaid/dhs, which is a huge relief. I'm not stealth but my trans status comes up less and less as I pass better.

Whoa!!! What a beard!! :p

You look so much like someone I went to school with, I was always jealous of his beard growing ability :p
Im closer to 3 years on T, than 1 year, and I cant grow anything! (Seriously).
Thats amazing!

Its always great to hear of the positive things people are experiencing.

I should be getting my 1st stage of phalloplasty surgery this Summer, thats what Id like to share, and also, I have my new pet, a Hedgehog! Hes white and brown and very grumpy at the mo. But Ill cut him some slack since hes still young :p

Testosterone hasn't done ->-bleeped-<- for me. In my opinion it's not powerful at all.  I'm a year and almost 2 months on T and it hasn't done much. I'm very disappointed with the T results. I still get "she, miss, ma'm, her" if I'm not wearing a hat. It's very rare for me to get male pronouns without a hat on.

@lexical: Congrats man! You look great! Glad the T has worked for you.  :)

Yeah we are. My voice passes too but as a young, maybe teen male. Some say my voice can go either way, male or female b/c it's still so high. But it doesn't pass over the phone. Does your voice pass over the phone?

You're looking fantastic, lexical! I'm impressed by your beard.

My changes have mostly been internal, and tied to other areas of my life. I'm a lot more confident and happy now, even if I have a ways to go. The satisfaction with where I am and where I'm going have as much to do with following my passions and treating my other issues as with top surgery and haircuts and wardrobe changes.

That's not to say that having top surgery and cutting off upwards of 2 feet of hair haven't made a world of difference.

(Taking pictures without flash makes a world of difference too xD)

I think the most major change I've experienced over the past couple of years is that now I can focus on life outside of gender. I think I've finally settled on what I really want to study, and I'm in a place now where I'll actually be able to set and accomplish goals in life.

Thanks man! That's awesome about your voice changes and facial hair. Sometimes I'll listen to my pre-t voice just to remind myself where I started. You get used to hearing yourself and the smaller changes over time but it's crazy how much it changes overall, you know?

Phone passing is tricky when your voice is in between since you don't have your masculine appearance to sway people in the right direction. I think it's a combo between the actual pitch of your voice and the way you speak. I think part of the reason it can take longer for some is that it takes time to adjust your phone demeanor since men and women in general speak a lot differently over the phone. All of a sudden I went from 30-40% phone passing to 100% and my voice didn't change that significantly. I've realized that my phone etiquette has changed a lot... like I'll ask a question if I don't know something, but I tend to take charge especially if I'm talking with a woman. Generally I'm speaking more confidently, using shorter sentences, less thank yous. Not saying you have to do what I do, but listen closely to the differences in male/female phone etiquette and you'll see what I mean.

Those internal changes are so huge, I'm really happy for ya Julian. I feel like it gets difficult to handle the parts of life outside of gender when it's such an integral part of where you're at but if you can, it makes all the difference. Big difference with the haircut too, looking great man.

Yeah, I don't get it either. Height maybe? Everyone tells me I have a neutral look where it could go either way, male or female. I wanna be able to pass 100% without a hat though.

Time is a factor.  As is genetics.  Lexical is above average in changes at one year on T from my experience of seeing guys one year on T.

All or most guys I've seen on youtube that have been on T for a year have the same effects that Lexical has gotten from T.

I really hope in time T will start working b/c at this rate it's not working at all as I've been in the neutral place for over a year and have not masculized at all.

There are a lot on there who have little to no changes or whose changes are coming very slowly.  Look again.  Also quit comparing yourself to other people, it will save you some grief.

Believe me.  T is taking a long time to work on me.  Though since it's only been 17 months I'm not worried.  That's a drop in the bucket.

Cis men's puberty times vary too.  My brother took 4 years to be able to grow a full beard.  His best friend still can't grow more than a few whiskers on his chin.

@Andy8715: I'm sorry T is taking a long time on you too.  I try not to compare myself, but when I look at these youtube videos I can't help but compare changes in a year. I try not to watch the comparison videos b/c that's when I start comparing myself and the changes in a year and it depresses me. So I just have to stay away from those youtube videos.

It's a socialization thing, I think.... I had that tendency too. Do you tend to raise your voice at the end of sentences? Maintaining that lower voice range is key to passing on the phone. I'm sure you've got a low enough voice to be passing on the phone, it's just that something is making you raise it.

As for T... I'm sorry things haven't been going well for you Dominick, wish I had something more constructive to say. Like Andy said, it's a time thing and everybody's body is so different.

Congrats on the full beard! :)  My partner is also of the more swarthy persuasion.  He has only been on for about 6 months and has already achieved some really impressive (and aggressive) sideburns!  I also have to shave his "zazzera" for him quite often.  Which, while it sounds dirty, is actually the technical term for that hair we get on the back of our necks, as I learned from Balderdash a few months ago.

@Dominick_81 This is probably a silly question, but have you had your T levels tested?  Maybe there's a need to play around with your dose.

I just had my T levels checked. The T was running low in my body by the end of the 2nd week so she upped my dosage, not sure by how much, but hoping my T levels are right now. I get another blood test in 3 months.
