Title: What do you think of my decided name?, thoughts on a middle name...
Post by: Andarta on April 11, 2012, 11:09:06 AM
Okay, i've been stressing over a name that I want to live with an be called an have come down to 3 that I really enjoy with one really standing out to me. My given name at birth is Michael which is gender neutral but you don't see many female Michaels, my mother liked the idea of switching it to Michele but i'm not feelin' it an after some serious thought would like to distance myself from Michael and any variant of it so I jotted down 3 I really liked but today after seeing the name Anya it just stood out like 'that's totally me' the other 2 names were Kaleena and Maxine but I know with Maxine i'll have to deal with being dubbed Max an I don't want to be called that an Kaleena while pretty seems too long.

Anya just keeps standing out to me an since i've seen it I can't find anything else that seems to fit me quite so well, it's miles away from Michael and even has a beautiful meaning so i'm concluded this is what i'm going with from here on out; what do you dudes/dudettes think of it?

I would like some input on what you believe a good middle name would be to complement it my birth middle name is Louis an just as with the first I want to have a MN that is completely different.

Thank You :)

I think it's really pretty. If it suits you, you like it, and you've liked it for a while... then stick with it. :)

As for middle name... It should start with a consonant. I think I rather like how a 'T' beginning would sound after Anya.

There are a lot of obscurer names to go for that letter, but not as many common ones. Talitha, for one, originates in Hebrew and apparently means woman, or child. Taylor is more common, and I kinda like it too. Tatiana... semi-obscure, but pretty. Tyler or Tyra are neat too. :)

So, yeah. My ideas. :p

Anya Tyler ____ ... Not bad at all.

Update: Just found one that sounds pretty cool, Tacy but i'm still gonna fish around, i'm bored lol

My opinion? All but Michelle are rare and flashy and thus not a good idea. Michelle is close to your birth name, so it's not a good idea.

Get something normal that you like. Trans or not, people with weird names get undesirable consequences.

If you really like it, keep it, but I suggest going through a list of names for your country & age first, in case something more normal interests you too.

Damn A, my mom more or less said the same thing you did yesterday tonight lol when I asked what her gripe was with it she said it was too exotic an that it sounded like a hookers name(ouch) plus she brought to light that there's the 'i'm on ya' pun. ;D

So um yeah i'll take your advice an look around, thanks for the input :)

Try this. I have guessed your location as US and age at 20 to 30, so

What about Ashley or Amy?

Well then - try Kathryn Amy

I actually like Anya myself.
I thought about my maternal grandmother's name Agnes, but even in it's European versions, it didn't feel "Me". I decided to go with her middle name though, so that's why I don't have one.  ;D  She got on okay with just one name.

Karen,

Go with it, if it feels right for you. Surely that's the whole point.

All this talk about "normal" names. Or rather, common names...

A name is what people are going to call you - a box is called a box, a cat is called a cat. The name has to suit you because it is your label before anything else. If you can choose your name... then you should be comfortable and happy with it, and it should mean something to you, and describe you well.

If Anya wanted a more common name, she probably would have gone for one. There is very little wrong with having a name that isn't used very often - which is, of course, different from picking a strange name, like Seaweed, or Apple, as those names might draw some teasing... whereas an uncommon name is unlikely to, tending to attract compliments.

So... go with what your heart tells you, absolutely; not what the heart of another tells you. It's your name.

Normality of names isn't a real big deal.  The name my parents assigned was rare.  I hadn't met anyone with the same name at the same age.  It did get a blip of popularity for a few years, but even then I don't know many people named that.

Jeneva is a name that meant something to me.  I don't care that it is seen as bad spelling of Geneva, but the J matched my original initial.

Well, it can't be denied that rare and original stuff, names included, attracts attention. In the end, it's all about what the person desires. Some people like to stand out, whilst others prefer to blend in. It's up to her, but my personal advice is to avoid unnecessary attention.

Plus, maybe there is another name that she likes just as much but is more common. That one name isn't necessarily the only one she feels good about.

I like Anya, too. Anya Michelle sounds pretty, if you can deal with having Michelle as your middle name.

I actually wasn't aware it was unique or out there I merely picked it because it has slavic/czech origins and I wanted something that sounded nice an payed homage to my czech heritage. But I have found another name I like quite alot an even my mother thought it was pretty good again it may be a little bit on the unique side but I love this one too, Fiona and i'm thinking about taking that with the middle name Faye because it flows with my mothers last name(Williams) which i'll be adopting instead of my birth(won't post due to security reasons) last name but i'm going to let that an Anya float around in my head for awhile.

Funny you bring this up it crossed my mind today how well that flows together so if I do take Anya up i'll be using that as my middle name most likely. Also nice MSI reference in your profile lol i'm listening to them as I type this. ;)

Thanks for all the feedback everyone! :D

While Anya may not be a common name I don't think it would attract much attention on its own. I know someone with that name and never thought twice about it.

Anya Michelle sounds really nice to me.

For me the test came when people started calling me by the name I had chosen. The first one I picked sounded great in my head but when others called me it I hated it. The second one is my name.

Good luck!

Fiona may not be so unique. I'd think it would have gotten more popular with Shrek movies. Don't laugh; movies and such do have quite an influence on names. As an example, the boy's names Liam and Lassa, and girl's names Kira and Swan were super unpopular if not entirely unknown, until a popular novel series, Les Chevaliers d'Émeraude (The Knights of Emerald) came out, and now we see a little Liam and such in kindergardens once in a while.

By the way, why do you need a middle name? I asked my mother about it, in hopes of pleasing her by taking on a middle name she would like, and she told me that only churches actually cared about middle names anymore; that they had no use whatsoever.

Maybe it doesn't work that way where you are, but if it does, maybe you can just skip it if it's a hassle. ~

Fiona is quite a common name. I had two Fionas in my class at school and knew another. One of my close friends is married to a Fiona.

lol i'll take a middle name but i'm gonna take my time with it. After some conversation with my ma an sis i'll be taking Fiona as a first, I never heard of the name Anya until I played Gears of War so ya movies an other media are doing a good job of getting some of them out in the open also remember Fiona from Eurotrip?  ;D

As a curiosity, how is Fiona pronunced in English? Is it Fa-i-o-o-na or Fee-o-na?

The second one. At least where I live in the UK.

I personally preferred Anya Michelle (might have to use that as a name for a character one day, if that's okay), but Fiona Faye's not too bad.

I'd try to stick to something more common.  My opinion is that anything flashy won't be taken seriously.  Like I've heard of a transwoman who named herself "Vectra."  I mean, really?  "Would you name your daughter that?" is what I'd ask her if she asked me the question that you posed here.  Cadence is about as flashy as I was willy to let myself go - I feel like it's a traditional name, yet a strong woman's name.  And I can use Cay and Cadie as diminutives.

Maybe it's just that I don't live in an English country, but Cadence looks even more exotic than Anya to me.

Personally, I love names that start with the letter 'L'. Mostly because when you sign it you can really go to town on the swirls and whatnot.

Okay, I only do that with my own name. But still, lol.

Interestingly, an Irish lass I know is called Fionnuala. That kinda illicited an "oooh that's pretty" when I heard it.
