Seeing the "hands" post made me think about my watch dilemma. I have wanted a nice men's watch (the gold or silver ones with the metal bands, not sports watches) for a long time, but always found that my wrist was too skinny. I don't want to wear a clunky teen sports watch for the rest of my life. Did you have the same trouble and how did you find a watch that fit? I've put on a bit of muscle and width in my wrists, but I still think they're going to be too skinny. Suggestions greatly appreciated!
I have a similar problem as my wrists are rather small. The watches made today for men seem to be much larger than older, more traditional watches. My grandfather's watch fits me, but most of the watches I try on in stores do not.
You can always take links out to custom fit it. The dial size might be too large though. What I found helpful was to try on any watch that the dial size was right, whether it was a mens or womens watch. Get the dial size and search for a suitable mens watch with that info.
You can also keep an eye on ebay for a vintage watch, especially if you have a local repair shop that can do a cleaning. I think a simple leather watchband might also fit better than links on a narrow wrist (which I also have), if the links are also 'scaled' for a larger dial size.
I have a nice Seiko watch that I bought. It isn't that big, and they can be adjusted if you take them into a jeweler. I bought it from the men's section years ago.
I looked out for watched with links or leather bands, and would just remove links/see if I could find a smaller band for the watch. I've had success with that route for a while now.
I second what Ayden said. If you're going to be spending money on a nice watch, anyway, you might as well spend the extra money to take it to a jeweler and get it resized.
Most watch bands can be resized really easily.
Several links on the end will have arrows showing which direction the pins pop out. (Crappy picture but you get the idea)

Get something skinny and hard (paperclip sometimes works, something harder might be needed) and set it into the hole on the top of the link. Use a hammer to tap the bar out in the direction of the arrow. Take out as many links as needed, and tap the bars back in the same direction they came out.
If it's a face size problem, look around for a size/shape that looks good on you (rectangular might fit better than round, etc) and use that for a guide when checking out styles. You can always mix and match bands with faces too.
Sweet, thanks for the tips, guys! I didn't realise you could take out some of the links!
