Glee continues to challenge viewers, this time by introducing a teenage transgender character named Unique.

Unique, who identifies as female, is part of a rival show choir to McKinley High's. Unique is introduced as "Wade" and initially dresses male. She wants to take the stage as Unique, though Kurt, the popular gay character portrayed by Chris Colfer, advises her against it. Unique explains her situation to Kurt, who identifies as male and gay.

After dealing heavily with gay themes since its debut, 'Glee' is finally taking on the issues that transgendered teens face. In tonight's episode, 'Saturday Night Glee-ver,' we were introduced to Unique: a transgendered character who is coming to terms with her identity.

Unique, part of the show choir Vocal Adrenaline, approaches Mercedes and Kurt as a young man named Wade (played by Alex from 'The Glee Project') who wants to wear a dress on stage and unveil his flashy alter ego. It appears at first that he came to the right place, to take advice from two of the show's bravest characters.

So far so good, but I'll be watching closely for them to screw it up like Brittany and Santana's "relationship"

I won't be surprised if it's disappointing. You guys know how the creators of Glee and Nip/Tuck are....

I saw a little bit of the episode.  I don't really watch the show often.

My first reaction was, "Gosh, that boy really sounds like a girl."

I was sort of jealous.

Ooooh I love Unique. I've never watched a Glee episode since it came out, it just didn't interest me, but I'm watching this episode with her in it. That character is FIERCE.

I've never watched Glee (and don't plan to), but from what I hear this portrayal was done respectfully and really well in general. That makes me happy
