Mr. Wallach, 50, is not just the meticulous creator of the lavish gown. He will also be wearing the dress tonight. He and several hundred other people, including some men who will dress as women, will be displaying their finest garments at the Marriott Marquis in Times Square for a fund-raising event called Night of a Thousand Gowns.

The main purpose of the event, for which more than 1,000 tickets costing $200 each have been sold, is to raise money for Pflag, or Parents, Families and Friends of Lesbians and Gays, a support and advocacy group. Since the gala was first held in 1987, it has become one of the premier events among gays and a forum to make fashion statements with extravagant dresses, enormous jewels and elaborate hairdos.
