A new report confirms that transgendered Australians suffer the worst rates of general and mental health - but where can they go for help? The women's sector needs to step up, argues Annelise Roberts
Last week La Trobe Uni quietly launched the second national survey of the health and wellbeing of gay, lesbian, bisexual and transgender Australians. Private Lives 2 provides us with some of the most comprehensive data yet about these population groups, putting flesh on the skeleton of existing research — which is very scant.

THE GUERRILLA ANGEL REPORT — Not surprisingly, a new LGBT study released in Australia indicates transgender people scored lowest most categories, including health and mental health. It appears this study is within the ballpark of research findings compiled in other countries — trans people face higher incidents of discrimination, violence, drug use, rejection from society and suicide.
The report, Private Lives 2, is the second such survey done, and although there has been some progress legislative arena for trans people in Australia, there isn't a corresponding improvement in the results.
It makes interesting,if slightly depressing reading. Some of us are doing what we can through local support groups though.
