Bidhan Barua, a second-year commerce student from Guwahati, will now have to wait longer for a sex-change operation.
Thwarted by his parents and stonewalled by the hospital where the surgery was scheduled for April 17, Barua had moved court. On Friday, the Bombay high court bench asked him
to approach another bench.
Barua, who calls himself Swati, says he felt like a woman in a man's body. He preferred dressing up in women's attire, something that angered his family. He wanted the operation so he could marry a flight lieutenant in the Indian Air Force.

Guwahati: A 21-year-old student from Guwahati who feels he is a woman trapped in man's body, has moved the Bombay High Court seeking to restrain his parents from interfering with his decision to undergo a sex change operation.
Bidhan Barua, who likes to call himself Swati, has alleged that his parents had thwarted the sex reassignment surgery which was scheduled to be performed at Saifee hospital in Guwahati on April 17. He said his parents threatened the doctors who have now refused to perform the operation unless the High Court gives a go ahead.

Bidhan Barua, 21, on Wednesday, wrote to the chief justice of the Bombay high court seeking permission to kill himself as the court has not yet issued a restraining order against his parents, who are opposing his sex change surgery. Bidhan had run away from his family in Guwahati in March
this year and come to Mumbai to get the surgery done. Doctors at Safiee hospital, Charni Road, had agreed to do it on April 2 but hesitated after his father served them a legal notice.

Mumbai: The Bombay High Court on Thursday warned Bhidan Barua, a 21-year-old student from Guwahati who wants to undergo sex change operation, that he cannot use pressure tactics and threaten to commit suicide unless his petition was heard and orders passed immediately.
The court summoned Bhidan's lawyer Ejaz Naqvi after the student wrote a letter to the Chief Justice of the Bombay High Court and other authorities threatening to commit suicide if his petition was not heard immediately. In the petition, Bhidan, who feels he is a woman trapped in a man's body, has urged the court to restrain his parents from prohibiting him to undergo sex change operation.

Depleting cash reserves hit Bidhan's sex-change planSumitra Deb Roy, TNN May 16, 2012, 12.58AM IST

MUMBAI: Sitting in a tiny room at an unkempt lodge in Colaba, Bidhan Baruah (21) wore a worried look on Tuesday afternoon. Camping in the city for 45 days now, his fast depleting cash reserve has cast uncertainty over the surgery that would turn the Guwahati lad into a woman.
"I am now left with just 50% of the amount required for the surgery. I am not even counting the post-operative expenses," Bidhan told TOI. "My appeal to all NGOs and renowned people who have undergone the same surgery, have gone unheard. I have not received help from anywhere so far," he said. He has been given an estimate of around Rs 3 lakh for the surgery, which may include hospitalisation and post-operative care. "But I have only about Rs 1.40 lakh left in my bank account and the hospital understandably will ask for a deposit at the time of admission," he said. Besides, Bidhan has to be on life-long hormonal medication and come back for frequent follow-ups.

MUMBAI: As Bidhan Baruah waits anxiously to go under the knife and take the final step towards becoming a woman, his family back in Guwahati is hoping against hope that their son changes his mind. The family has also decided not to appeal in the Supreme Court against Bidhan's gender reassignment surgery due to financial constraints.

Bidhan Barua accuses navy man of raping him

Bidhan Barua's troubles seem unending. The 21-year-old from Guwahati had to brave a lot of storm, including regular beatings and humiliation from his parents, to finally get the nod from the Bombay High Court to undergo a sex change as he feels that he is a woman trapped in a man's body.
Bidhan had wanted to undergo the operation because he harboured dreams of marrying a flight lieutenant of the Indian Air Force, whom he had met in Guwahati, and had fallen in love.
But barely months after it seemed Bidhan, finally, had his life sorted out comes the news of him approaching the Mumbai Police to file a rape case against his 'fiance', a defence personnel.
