Title: hair raising question :P
Post by: Jessica M on May 07, 2012, 03:05:50 PM
This is a post I made in Beauty a few days ago, I was thinking maybe the lack of replies is because the low traffic in that subforum. So I thought I might ask you ladies your opinion. Below is exactly what I wrote in that post. (mods please let me know if this double post is a problem)

I have been growing my hair out for a while now and it's about time to get something done with it. I don't want to get just a regular trim because that would end up looking male. What I wan't to know from you lovely folks is what hairstyle do you think I can pull off, using what I've got, to make me look feminine.

I guess I really want something on the femme side of andro cause I'm not full time so I would still need to play it as a guys cut every so often, but I really want to hear you guys' feedback on this cause I'm a little clueless

I hope the photos appear, I don't really know what I'm doing with them at this point.
I'm not wearing make-up and the light is just whats coming through my bedroom window. They were taken on my phone so the quality is maybe not great but still it's the hair I want to know about.
Thanks guys,
Jessie :)

the side parting and sweeping the main mass across to one side shouts male at the moment so try centre parting or just no parting.
the long straggly bit at front shouts male too.

a general fluffing up and spraying to keep it up would help for when you want to look female.

the girls at the local salon will probably be quite delighted to help get it into a nice style that can be worn back and flat for work but still be easily fluffed forward for leisure.

Don't do anything with it as it's still very short....just keep growing it!

Have to agree with Naturally Blonde. I'd grow it some more before getting it cut.

Yeah, I know it's not that long yet but it's getting quite damaged. You know like split ends, frizzy etc. I've tried straightening it to get a bit of control but it's all a bit shapeless. Ultimately I want it  long, I love cute short cuts but don't have the features to pull that off. I was wondering if there was any shaping/trimming that I could do to feminise it a little while it grows you know.

If it helps the back is a hot mess right now, just a thick bush of unruly hair. I could get a picture of that if it would help.

Find a hairdresser thats good and that you are comfortable with.  It would be nice but she doesn't have to know you are trans as long as you communicate with her you are growing your hair out and you just want the ends trimmed and cleaned up.  This will make it look neater during this period and also grow faster.  One rule of thumb I have heard is that hair will grow 6" a year and you will lose 1-2" of that getting the ends trimmed.  Whatever you do don't risk getting in someone's chair thats going to chop any length off.  I have only been growing mine for 7 months and first got it trimmed about a month ago.  She did cut some length from the back (which was getting messy too) because I am trying to even that out with the sides.  She said come back for a trim every 10 weeks but I am going to try 12 or so and get her to style and color it too.

This is very good advice, Jessica. If you want to have good looking long hair, mess with it as little as possible while it's growing out. Hair is fragile and should be treated like expensive silk or something. Keep it clean and well conditioned, but not too often.
