AKA: my love for sterotypical carribean food
(I figured "yummy black people food" might have been a little bit too non PC )
So I really really love rice and pea. and breadcrumed chicken . and gravy, oh the gravy ... damn it now i need a bucket im drooling so much (classy huh).
I wonder if its my tastebuds (fine tastebuds and olfactory system - pedantists :P ) ..er oh yes, if my tastebuds are genetically predisposed to this, or if its just the way that my grandma cooks.
I also mustered the courage to ask her how she made everything, I'm so looking forward to trying it some time (proper rice and pea is more difficult than it sounds)
I do feel a tiny bit ashamed for liking such sterotypical food, but its so good, and its probably just my contrarityTM playing up
anyone ellse like the soul food of their roots?
Yes i like ham cabbage and potato's and chili and spicy salsa that i make from my garden and eggs and well there are too many good foods i like to maker to report here..
I would have came running if you put out a sign that said "Yummy black people food!" I thought this was going to be about roots from the ground, like potatoes, carrots, yams, and the like! Not your roots! Oh well, it looks like a good food discussion! Hugs, Devlyn

I like cooking with Jamaican jerk sauce. It has a nice warm spicy taste.
But I usually associate "soul food" with more southern-style cooking. Am I wrong?
Seeing you are not from the Kimberley or Torres Strait Islands, you aren't black, just vaguely brown so what is all this American racial rubbish anyway? ;)
Roots here would be-Spring Roast Lamb with mint sauce,new potatoes boiled in their jackets, brussel sprouts and peas straight from the garden. That's my roots, but I love Carribean style. Hotter the better.

this thread is making me sooo hungry, hey im not vaguely brown, im "dipped in coffee", is the common description, but one of my grandmas is from barbados, so when i go there, i get the huge plates of rice and pea, and the chicken or the fish and the soup with everything but the kitchen sink in (actually she claims to put that in too) oh but yeah, since im only half, im only allowed to do the casual racism thing half the time, dems the rules. theres no american about it. :P
on the whiter hand(my palm i guess?), there would be (lancashire) hotpot which my other grandma used to make (with a special pan just for me without potatoes) before my grandad died, though with corned beef instead of .um lamb i think is usually used. or she'd make homemade chips (thats fries in american) - which are the best chips ever!
also today I was shoping in asda and i saw one of the seasonings my grandma uses and got it! squeee ^^^

Definitely what I think of when I hear soul-food
I LOVE Caribbean food! Rice made so you have a good concón, one of the best things. I also really love mangú (My ex swore I was aplatanado haha) Seriously the flavor profiles are so bright and inviting that the food is just...well...fun
For my roots, I guess it would be corned beef on rye and matzoh ball soup? So boring :P (Although good matzoh ball soup is heaven as a comfort food) My mom is a horrible cook so I can't say that I grew up with home cooked meals of any particular genre. She's great at ordering takeout though :D
