Hired and fired in the same day, one Lincoln youth says her transgender status resulted in losing a Massage Envy job.
But according to S & C Therapy, Inc. president Christine Ambrecht, that's not the case. Ambrecht said S & C Therapy owns the Lincoln Massage Envy.
Andrew Hawkins, 19, is a male-to-female transgender who has not yet undergone gender reassignment surgery.
after reading this and hearing what Andrew/Ariel had to say I have to say I am kinda on the side of the business with this one.
According to other sources and this source, Andrew/Ariel (kinda confused what to call her based on the story so Ill just say "A" for now) filled out the application as Andrew, interviewed as Andrew but showed up to work as Ariel.
This would confuse anyone...even companies that are sympathetic to transgender people would find this confusing....and frustrating from a sales person point of view.
A also stated that she also still lives as a man because her name hasn't been changed yet? She's going to have a hard time transitioning if she lives as a man because her ID says otherwise. I would be safe to say the vast majority of us went fulltime and then changed our names on the ID.
When I was still legally Rob, I went to JC Penney as Annah, filled out the Application as Annah and explained the legal name versus my preferred name. It went well because I laid everything on the table. There was no surprises.
I could totally see JC Penney letting me go the first day if I filled out the application as Rob, interviewed as Rob, but showed up as Annah but still wanted to be called Rob. Honestly, I would expect them to fire me...I probably would have done the same thing. That's very confusing to a job and to the people they are buying their goods from.
I really cannot blame the company on this one.
Plus her explanations are also incorrect. She says it takes three years of hormones in order to get SRS. No it doesn't. It is up to the therapist you are working with. My SRS letters came 6 months after HRT.
A also said "Since I'm stuck in a male body, I still dress that way," Hawkins said. "Sometimes I will dress up and go all out." That's not how it works. If you want SRS, you must go through a one year real life experience in the country she lives in....again it is up to the therapist but if you are stuck in a male body so you must dress in a male body....does she expect to start dressing as a girl the day after her SRS??
Her own comments conflict with each other. If she said what I stated above, then why did she present herself as Ariel the first day of work?
I agree with the company on this one.
