Members say they are gearing up for more information sessions to teach what hate crime is and why the public should report it.

"A lot go unreported," said Carol Balasa.

Last year, 12 hate crimes were recorded in Palm Springs. However, Palm Springs Police Chief Gary Jeandron has said the department responds to mostly incidents and not crimes against a specific person.

Of those crimes, a handful were directed at the gay, lesbian, bisexual and transgender population, police said. According to a UCLA analysis of the 2000 Census, Palm Springs is the fifth-most gay community in the United States.
